Niji No Kai is an international club where people of
different backgrounds get a chance to interact with each
other, especially for study abroad students who want to
know more about Japanese culture, and Japanese
people who are interested in meeting international
students. People are very friendly and helpful in times of
trouble, especially when it comes to language barrier.
Niji No Kai has a lot of events and workshops, such as
interesting selected topics about Japanese culture and
language, which promote cultural entities. One of the selected topics was about terms and slangs
for different types of people in Japan. The activities are really fun because members always
interact with each other while applying the knowledge they learn from these workshops. These are
some of the things that one may not learn inside of a regular academic classroom.
Interactions are not just held in certain events exclusively, but people also have casual hangouts at
the Niji No Kai lounge (Building 1) at Waseda University, especially during lunch break. People also
go out to eat dinner or have another gathering after official events are over or anytime when
someone organizes an event.
Also, Niji No Kai hosts big events such as snow boarding and field trips for freshman camp. Usually,
we take a bus and lodge in for a few days for a good deal of a price. There are a lot of fun activities
held but there’s also an ample amount of time and I usually spend this time in a nice hot tub.
Niji No Kai is a good place to make friends, have fun, and learn about cultures and languages.
There are also some opportunities for leadership skills such as organizing an event or participating
as a presenter of a workshop. One of the workshops I participated in is teaching in the English
workshop and we talked about the dating life in the U.S.
Personally, I chose Niji No Kai in the first place because they have a lot of events and their events
are held in different days so it’s flexible for my schedule. I made friends and I got to know a lot
about their cultures and about their countries. My language ability, especially Japanese, has also
improved a lot. Lastly, my experiences have been valuable to me and they’re definitely worth it!
So for the new oncoming members, I would say that: definitely come out of your comfort zone and
experience as much as you can. Niji No Kai is one of those welcoming doors that is always open
and can provide you with full of opportunities, fun, and friends!
