- My time as a journalist. What it looked like six years ago. What will it look like in six years? My accidental blogging story.
- What’s the first thing you do when you want to know the answer to something? Google. What do you think your potential employers are going to do? What will they find? You have to power to determine what they find.
- Your blog can be – and should be – a living, breathing CV if you plan to seek out a job in any aspect of journalism.
- While writing a blog and using social networks around a blog, you are actually adding to your skillset on a daily basis – these skills are in demand, as a journalist and in related industries.
- There are many ways your blog can earn you money. Just like traditional print media, selling banner advertising is just one way.
- The bulk of my business income comes through sponsored posts and ambassadorships sold through my agency, The Remarkables Group.
- Writing an ebook – even if it’s something expanded from your blog is a good way to create another income stream.
- And if you’re lucky one of the buyers of your ebook might be a publisher!
- The social media skills you use every day around your blog – and personally – are very attractive to all sizes of businesses. So much of social media is mysterious to many business owners. They know they should be on it but don’t know how to start or use it effectively.
- Check out Allison Tait’s blog for great tips about freelance writing and publishing. Her blog has evolved from what was a personal blog to be an online CV for her writing contracts.
- Just like traditional media – you need people interested in what you have to say. They’re not buying the content like a paper (Hoopla) but without the numbers and engagement you don’t have a product that will be attractive to advertisers or a platform from which to sell a product.
- Seems common sense but something I always raise – I never run out of ideas.
- Every time you post, ask yourself if your content is doing any of these things …
- Readers want to connect with the person behind a blog – be you and you’ll attract people who like you for being you. Authenticity gets bandied around a lot but without it the connection between your readers and your will not be there.
- This is the biggest difference between mainstream media and blogging!
- People creatures of habit – help your readers by being consistent with when you post.
- This is not an overnight thing. It took me three and a half years to earn a full time income solely from my blog. Be persistent in your work and goals but drop the urgency around making money from it. Don’t give up your day job!
- It’s essential that you get off your own blog to find your tribe – social media is ideal for this. Choose the social media networks that you most like and where your potential readers are most likely to be hanging out.
- This is the big one for me. I could not have done what I have done. I could not get up and work every day without loving what I do. It gives me a buzz that I got occasionally from my career as a journalist but nowhere near what I get on a daily basis. I have flexibility in my role and I’m helping change lives every day. It’s an honour and a privilege.
