The Have’s and
The Have-Not’s
• Jersey Shore Town –
• Oceanfront Mansions (The Have’s)
• Support staff for boardwalk and
restaurants (The Have-Not’s)
• Black Trash Bags
• Automated Garbage Trucks
• Too many rules at Recycling Ctr –
Prohibited from taking items! 
Is this Progress?
What’s Hiding In Those Bags?
(…anything good?)
Better Scenario:
The Have’s and
The Have-Not’s
• Jersey Shore Town –
• Oceanfront Mansions (The Have’s) – set out items for Free
• Support staff for boardwalk and restaurants (The Have-Not’s)
• Black Clear Trash Bags – to enforce recycling and reuse
• Automated Manual Garbage Trucks – visual inspections
• “Dumptique” at the Recycling Ctr – Free to take anything home!
“Help Dry Up the Waste Stream”
Toolkits for
Success
• Global: Buy Nothing Project
• National: Craigslist, Freecycle, Facebook, …
• Regional: Repair Cafés, Swap Meets, ReUse
Outlets (Thrift Shops, Salvation Army,
Goodwill, AmVets…)
• Schools/Colleges: Sustainable Jersey for
Schools, Beyond Waste Student Summits
• Local Communities: recycling center (drop-
off/p-u) Dumptique, Sharing Libraries, formal
Wear Drive & Give-Away
• Workplace: Swap table, office supplies
• Households: swaps, composting, FREE sign in
front yard
Global Tools – an example
• The Buy Nothing Project (on CBS News 02/17/20) … A Gift Economy
• encourages people to share what they have with others – goods and services, without money
changing hands. Since its inception in 2013 outside Seattle, it’s become a worldwide social
movement with the help of more than 4,000 volunteers coordinating groups in 30 Nations!!
• In 2015, volunteer Johanna Humphrey started the Buy Nothing group for her Roxborough/
Manayunk neighborhood in Phila. Her group has grown to nearly 2,000 members. With that
many people, the group can get unwieldy, so soon it will split into two groups.
• "I really primarily do it for the environmental reasons. If there's a way that I can stop some of
my stuff from ending up in a trash heap somewhere, I feel like I've done my job," says
Humphrey.
• Buy Nothing Project rules are simple: Post anything you’d like to give away, lend, or share
amongst neighbors. Ask for anything you’d like to receive for free or borrow. Keep it legal.…
• Asked why the project uses Facebook? Co-founder Liesl Clark says that's where the people are
right now. On the organization's website it reads, "We need to use the master's tools to
dismantle the castle.“

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a Stop ‘N’ Swap?
It’s a free event where people can find new homes for unwanted items
(like clothes, books, shoes, toys, housewares) or take items they can
use. You don’t need to bring something to take something!
How does it work?
Simply drop any items at our "drop-off" table. We'll weigh them, sort
them, and put them out on our display tables. Items on the display
tables are free on a first come, first served basis.
Why does GrowNYC host Stop ‘N’ Swap?
Stop ‘N’ Swap is one way we pursue our mission to reduce waste and
promote reuse in NYC. By participating in community swaps, New
Yorkers simultaneously reduce their contribution to landfills and
prevent the waste that comes from the production, packaging and
transportation required to get new things.
It's also an opportunity to engage with NYC communities about
recycling resources in their neighborhood and the services
of GrowNYC's zero waste programs funded by the NYC Department of
Sanitation. Our goal is hold a swap in every community district in NYC
every year, so that we can give everyone in the city an opportunity to
reduce and reuse right where they live!
What should I bring to the Stop 'N' Swap?
Bring yourself! Bring family and friends. Definitely bring a tote bag or
two for items you want to take home.
You are encouraged to bring clean, working and portable items you no
longer need, but this is not required.
Schools / Colleges
• At Harvard, Freecycle events, an online reuse lists,
move-out donation boxes, and a Recycling and
Surplus Center all encourage reuse of donated or
unwanted materials.
• Move-In and Move-Out: Students can donate
unwanted books, furniture, and other materials
before move out in the spring.
• Harvard Recycling provides more than 200 schools,
houses of worship, community centers, police
departments, and homeless shelters across the
Boston area with useful items.
The Beyond Waste Student Summits bring together students to
understand the systemic impact of waste, from extraction to disposal.

  3. Start with my experience living in Pt Pleasant Beach and was frustrated at what was or may have been thrown out by the HAVES which could have gone to the have-nots. Tomato cages, for example - Trash collectors are also prohibited from keeping items set out for trash.
  4. Observation and Examples of programs doomed for Failure – black plastic bags, automated trash p-u, Automated huge containers with no oversight doesn’t seem like progress. By offering better rates to customers with more frequent pick-ups or larger containers is not helping us reach zero waste.
  5. I feel that having clear bags will improve recycling rates. By the way, A variety of slide types – as if I’m a salesperson for the latest ppt design ideas.
  6. Remember our Goal is to Help Dry Up the Waste Stream In Darien, CT for example where my brother lives, their Dumptique is very popular with residents and is well-maintained. In Bay Head, NJ next to PPB they have a book exchange library at their recycling drop-off center. Make it a welcoming place for exchange items – but not precious metals which the town may be entitled to. The head of their Sustainable Jersey Program is also their Env’l Commission Chair. Env’l Commissions are organized by ANJEC and if you’re not familiar with them, please look them up.
  7. May I remind you of what our goals are? With Toolkits for Success: We can Help Dry Up the Waste Stream Building pictured is from Ithaca NY
  8. Toolkit Components Examples of preferred or successful /model programs in diminishing size order – Global, National, Regional, Schools/Colleges, Local Communities, Workplace, Home/Apts In decreasing order of vastness…
  9. This is my ugliest slide – breaking all the rules of PPT. On CBS news Presidents Day this year – started in 2013 in WA state – now in 30 countries I’m excited to see these projects go mainstream – especially when televised.
  10. Free Free Free – notice a pattern here
  11. Tompkins County Re-Use – I visited 2 weeks ago. Volunteer told me that “Everyone has smiles on their faces”. Shoppers and volunteers. You’ll see more images from the Thompkins County Reuse project Repair Cafes teach people how to repair items so they aren’t thrown away. (where is away anyways?)
  12. Tompkins County Reuse – Volunteers get 20% off purchases Reuse Trail Guide – for Tompkins County (Ithaca) – Cornell University home. Started in 2008 and by 2016 had grown to 24 employees You’ll see more images from the Thompkins County Reuse project
  13. NYC - They weigh them – I’m thinking for data on reduced tonnage to landfills?
  14. Note the name of the magazine – Community magazine NJ Community sharing of environmental activities
  15. My Laminated Fish ID sits in my home – rarely used except when I travel to the tropics and go snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Wouldn’t it be great if others could use it? Tool Lending Libraries are really taking off. Collections vary depending on donations and community interest. Libraries are re-positioning themselves as lenders of all types of materials – both physical and virtual. Goals – “wouldn’t it be great if …” I just saw on Nextdoor someone looking to borrow a chainsaw!!
  16. My Opinion: Crafts are missed Opportunities. During House clean-outs are certainly junked along with grandma’s afghans… More from Ithaca’s ReUse I got a chuckle out of the “Misc Med Sized HH items”
  17. The Green-Swap Shop – at USEPA Office Supplies reuse – especially when moving offices and retirements – part of the EMS. I organized an Accessories Swap at work for scarves, purses, shawls and jewelry.
  18. Pedicures – Need not be wasteful. Reuse plastic bag – bringing it full circle. I rescued this from a trash can.
  19. So if we replace the word Waste with Resource – we can begin to look at things differently. Which sharing group are you going to join?
