The applications in the MS Office suite each have different functions that we learn as users, most often as the need arises.
However, underneath, there is a COHERENT common understanding of how the software works. This is provided both by the consistent design of the user interface in each application, and by the ability of a user to configure that interface for his/her learning style (more visual, more text oriented, linear, random access, etc.)
As a user, if we don’t see the connection between activities or tasks, we won’t acquire that common base that lets us generalize one task to another. As technical communicators, if we only answer the contingent need, we won’t proide users with the pat that points these connections out.
When we have a large area where all applications coincide, we get consolidated expertise, which is extremely valuable for mastery of the entire suite, giving the user an expert profile and the ability to share this knowledge with others
Again, this is not static, but emerging.
<NL>
Before, structured coherent knowledge meant something that was built sequentially, mainly at school.
Now, we can get it everywhere. We get it from formal and informal sources.
As information becomes so fragmented, reconstructing it is really necessary.
<RG>
The notion of structured authoring will become more natural.
What´s needed is to find ways of giving continuity to the fragmented pieces. The role of the curator as story teller is a key one.
Content management systems on many levels, from Evernote to CCMS, will start to become automated, personalized, geolocalized, in order to help create the continuities.
The curator/story teller will have the role to provide meaning to the whole picture.

This is a more elaborated example of draped wearable technology, from MIT:
The FingerReader scans a line of text, and reads it aloud. It is addressed to vision-impaired, as it gives access to the majority of books not available in Braile.
One could imagine other uses, including reading instruction for children, and eventually, oral translation on the fly from books in different languages.
It’s potentially a powerful application
