Nearly one million people are affected by natural disasters each year. When thinking about response and recovery, social media has become the go-to tool for those affected by disasters. The goal of this toolkit is to help nonprofits and community groups harness the power of social media and search engine optimization (SEO) in emergency and disaster situations. It builds on the lessons learned from the tremendous effort of hundreds of community groups, government agencies, and ad hoc groups during and after Sandy and proposes best practices, new tips, and tools for cost-effective online disaster outreach.

Melanie McBride It seems as if when It comes to emergency response that no one really looks too far passed the immediate threat and the immediate help they can provide. And that it acceptable for the individual person and small groups that want to help. However, once the smoke has settled and people move back into their old lives and homes chances are that the norm is either not restored or it was what caused the disaster in the first place and therefore It would not be advisable to go back to. Recovery operations and continued services for the people becomes the focus now. In my county there are a number of governmental as well as non-governmental agencies that are there to restore normal operations or to help set new norms with better practices. Maybe it is because I am a soldier that the military is always what comes to mind first for me. The army corps of engineers are very prevalent in my home area. The built mane water reservoirs and take responsibility for a lot of the areas wellbeing after flooding or tornado damage. Another big contributor is the Railroad who has a sizable hub in Herrington KS and therefore has an interest in helping the community to recover should they need the help. The railroad fortunately has the fiscal resources to make lasting and meaningful contributions in the aftermath of a disaster. The area has several small airports that offer their help in functioning as a hub for resupply or even evacuation. The military in Ft. Riley has the aircrafts to do the leg work and the national guard the manpower to tie it all together. Numerous small agencies are also available if they did not take an incapacitating hit themselves, such as Nursing homes, Day care centers, schools, local EMS, Volunteer fire departments and try county telephone as the communication facility just to name a few. After looking closely over the area hazard mitigation and response plan I feel confident the people in north western Kansas will have a solid and speedy established continuation of services if they should need it. Others are inclined to view Congressional oversight as being, on balance and after a somewhat rocky start in the late 1970s, a decided plus for the Community by providing loci for Congressional advocacy, support for intelligence, providing a rigorous review and questioning of intelligence activities and budgets (Van Wagenen, 2007). ATHack! Inc. (pronounced “attack”) is a group of activists and technologists sourcing, funding, and launching new and innovative data-driven ideas to solve major social issues. Our inaugural hackathon is focused on developing tools and solutions that will support anti-human trafficking efforts. Viable projects that come out of our hackathons are invited to apply to our accelerator program in order to become sustainable operations that can help the community. We deeply encourage multi-cultural and multi-gendered diversity in attendance of our hackathons, seeking to grow entrepreneurship among women and people of color. Finding innovative solutions to community issues can only be done thoughtfully and holistically by engaging all aspects of our multi-cultural and multi-gendered community. Types of tech projects we look to catalyze include, but are not limited to: data centric models to fighting human trafficking, software/hardware tech solutions for poverty afflicted populations, resource solutions for the homeless, etc.

Giellis: Coronavirus shutdown offers opportunity to rethink Denver’s priorities Plans for airport, convention center, National Western complex should change By JAMIE GIELLIS | Guest Commentary April 25, 2020 at 6:59 a.m. I have been spending my days listening, working closely with friends, neighbors and elected leaders all sobered by this challenging moment and what lies ahead. This pandemic has shaken us, shedding light on the fractures in our society. It has also, however, revealed our common good. Our community has united to lighten the load of those hit hardest in so many ways. I myself have spent my days sewing — part of an army of people across the city making masks for our front- line workers and others in need. Each stitch represents hope, and I believe we have every reason to hope that something good will come out of these long, challenging days. Ensuring that happens means our city leaders must seize the opportunities for change this crisis has presented. Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that we live in an “inescapable network of mutuality” and this pandemic has laid that bare. Nobody is untouched by its impacts, and light has been shed on the economic vulnerability of so many. Old recession playbooks won’t work to pull us all out of this together. Instead, investing in programs that help us rebuild a sustainable and resilient economy must be our approach going forward. Housing, jobs, small businesses, food security, health care and equity are core to that. As we all individually adjust to new realities, we must ask our leadership to do the same. The city of Denver faces a dire financial future – $180 million in lost tax revenue already with bigger losses to come. Tough decisions will need to be made about projects to keep or cut. It is time to step back and hit the reset button on our priorities. If we carry on as before ignoring the deep fissures in our system, we will only perpetuate this crisis. Our city’s leaders must focus on rebuilding with resiliency – lifting up and creating a safety net for those this pandemic has impacted most – our small businesses and workers, our community of individuals experiencing homelessness, our elderly community, our kids. The pandemic has forced Denver to act on issues that have long challenged all of these groups; our legacy coming out of it should not be temporary interventions, but permanent changes. A critical component to this is pivoting away from big physical infrastructure projects that are no longer relevant, freeing up resources to focus on the wellbeing of the people of this city. This means: • Substantially paring back the renovation of Denver International Airport to focus only on the necessary. We’ve already lost hundreds of millions of dollars to mismanagement; as airlines and concessionaires face extraordinary losses of their own, this is not the time to add more cost burden. • Halting the expansion of the Colora ...

The Bedrock Profect is a non-congressional solution to severe poverty which can change the course of the American mind, preventing this free society from splitting into metaphorical fascists and "untouchables" like they exist in India today. When this project is implemented, it should be done with absolute secrecy to protect it from political destruction. This is a private program for the public, similar to the CIA; federally protected and operating in secret. The President of the United States is the only human being that can make it happen. The plan must be federal. The existence of the program should be concealed for a minimum of 25 years. All US Presidents can have black ops programs. We can either find a bank that wants $15trillion or we can start our own bank, federal, but private, serving all 50 States and US republics and every legal Citizen of the U.S.A.

What is on the five-year horizon for K-12 schools worldwide? Which trends and technologies will drive educational change? What are the challenges that we consider as solvable or difficult to overcome, and how can we strategize effective solutions? These questions and similar inquiries regarding technology adoption and transforming teaching and learning steered the collaborative research and discussions of a body of 55 experts to produce the NMC/CoSN Horizon Report: 2016 K-12 Edition, made possible by Share Fair Nation under a grant from the Morgridge Family Foundation.

The 2014 NMC Technology Outlook for Australian Tertiary Education: A Horizon Project Regional Report reflects a collaborative research effort between the NMC and Open Universities Australia to help inform Australian education leaders about significant developments in technologies supporting teaching, learning, and creative inquiry in tertiary education. This report was produced to explore emerging technologies and forecast their potential impact expressly in a tertiary education context. In the effort that took place from January through March 2014, a carefully selected panel of experts was asked to consider hundreds of relevant articles, news, blog posts, research, and project examples as part of the preparation that ultimately pinpointed the most notable emerging technology topics, trends, and challenges for Australian tertiary education over the next five years. View the work the produced the report and meet the expert panel at aus.wiki.nmc.org.

The NMC Horizon Report > 2012 Museum Edition, is a co-production with the Marcus Institute for Digital Education in the Arts (MIDEA), and examines emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in education and interpretation within the museum environment. The international composition of the advisory board that chose the technologies, trends, and challenges reflects the care with which a global perspective for the report was assembled. While there are many local factors affecting the adoption and use of emerging technologies in museums, there are also issues that transcend regional boundaries and questions we all face. It was with this in mind that the report was created. View the work of the advisory board on the official museum wiki at museum.wiki.nmc.org.

This slide deck created by Don Undeen is from a MIDEA Connect webinar that took place May 1, 2013. Don Undeen is the Media Lab Manager at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York & spoke about how museums are in a great position to engage the maker and hacker communities. In June of 2012, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in cooperation with MakerBot Industries, invited 30 digital artists into the museum to photograph collection sculptures, turn those images into digital 3D models, make new works based on those models, and print them on MakerBot's 3D printers. Undeen explained in the webinar how the Hackathon is a springboard for considering practical possibilities in any institution. He also discussed inexpensive software and hardware that opens up new possibilities for engagement with art lovers of all ages and abilities, and delved into the DIY spirit of cooperation.
