NEWS
First things first: basic terms used by professionals
Journalism, or News, is…
…the first draft of …pamphlets,
history newsletters, newspapers,
…a disciple of magazines, radio, film,
gathering, writing and TV, and books
reporting news, along
with editing and
presenting news on print
and electronically.
A journalist is…
 Someone who collects,
  disseminates information
  about current events,
  people, trends, and issues.
 A person who writes for
  newspaper or magazines,
  or prepares news to be
  broadcast on radio, TV and
  online.
News is…
                    News commonly contains the
Any information
on current events information about Who, What,
relayed by print,
broadcast or
When, Where, Why and How of an
world of mouth to event.
a third party or
mass audience is No special talent is required to
news.
                    recognize conventional news, when
they occur; journalists have the ability
                    to identify newsworthy elements

Proximity, prominence, impact, unusual, amusing, conflict, timeliness
5 trends in newspaper editing
1. Layout-driven production
2. Consolidating the Important: Always start with your slide size
set to the aspect ratio you intend to use. If you
publication change the slide size after you’ve created
some slides, your pictures and other graphics
3. Multi-platform will be resized. This could potentially distort
                                their appearance.
4. Newspapers become
     magazines
5. A media for in-depth
     reporting
The editor’s role
Editing can be an extremely difficult job. It can also be quite rewarding.
The primary duty of an editor is to edit – to determine what the audience sees
and what it does not. Too often people think of this work only in terms of basic
copyediting tasks, such as checking for grammatical correctness, accuracy,
violations of AP style and so on.
Today’s editors

    from-line-editors/
 Being a good editor means being a good journalist and applying news
judgment in selecting what stories will appear and how they will be
treated. It means being a good writer, whether creating a front page
headline or adding some punch to a hard news lead. It means being a
good designer -- part artist and part engineer. And it means being a
good manager, one who can select the right person for an assignment
and then ensure that person does the best job possible. This class
provides you with the basic skills needed to make yourself into that
    kind of an editor.
