Did you know
that seventy
percent, or over
two-thirds of the
earth’s surface is
covered with
water?
2. The Earth's oceans are all connected to one another. Until the
year 2000, there were four recognized oceans: the Pacific,
Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. In the Spring of 2000, the
International Hydrographic Organization established a new
ocean, the Southern Ocean (it surrounds Antarctica and extends
to 60 degrees latitude).
3. An ocean is a large body of salt water that surrounds a continent.
The five main oceans are the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern,
and the Arctic. The Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean.

5. • There are also many seas (smaller branches of
an ocean); seas are often partly enclosed by
land. The largest seas are the South China Sea,
the Caribbean Sea, and the Mediterranean
Sea.
• The Bahamas is not located in The Caribbean
Sea but the Atlantic Ocean.
6.
7. A river is a large flowing
body of fresh water that
flows across land and
usually empties into a sea
or ocean.
Fresh water can be found in
many other bodies of water
too, such as ponds,
streams, and swamps.
8. A lake is a large body
of fresh water
surrounded by land on
all sides.
Lake Kaweah is located
in Tulare County.
9. A lake can be salty if
there is no outlet to
the sea.
The saltiest lake is the
Dead Sea in Israel and
Jordan.
10. The Dead Sea has a
high concentration of
salt because of its high
evaporation rate.
The Dead Sea is nine
times saltier than the
ocean.
Its so salty, it cannot
support life.
