Reading: Basic Guidelines to Problem Solving and Decision Making (above link)
Main Points:
-Much of business involves solving problems and making decisions. Therefore, an organized approach to solving problems is
necessary; with time, this approach will become second nature.
-For BUSI 2190, we will follow the problem-solving model in this article, but adapt it a bit (see next slide)
-For background information on this model, consult the article: http://www.managementhelp.org/prsn_prd/prb_bsc.htm
Problem Solving
1. Define the problem and consider its causes.
2. Brainstorm for solutions
3. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each
possible solution
4. Select the best solution(s). Give reasons why.
5. Make a plan (objectives, activities, deadlines) to
implement best solution.
6. Implement the plan. Consider possible difficulties to
implement it.
7. Monitor and evaluate results. Learn from mistakes.
Case Study: Steps 1-4
In Fujairah, Lulu’s sales are going down. One month ago, Carrefour opened and it
offers more products, fresher products and better prices. As the owner of Lulu,

Case Study
On November 2, 2010 the website, www.emirates247.com, reported that 63% of all UAE child deaths are traffic
related. The article states,
“Most accidents claim the lives of children because they are not strapped in. Traffic accidents are the
leading cause of infant mortality in the UAE and account for 63 per cent of all child deaths, according to
Dubai Health Authority (DHA). Most accidents claim the lives of children because they are not strapped
