9. Originality!!
“…flashes of inspiration are infrequent … One often arrives
at the end of a project before one is able to take the
measure of how original the contribution is, and this
illustrates the point … that originality is a by-product of
quite ordinary scholarly activity. All one has to do is to
recognise it when it emerges and give it full scope.”

10. Originality!!
What are YOU doing actually?
- Unexplored
- Untested
- Alternatives
- Data/ Content
- Methods/ Techniques
- Contexts
- Interpretations

11. Problems we face as researchers
when we want to …create…original research

13. SEARCH ENGINES
Why so many?
Keywords (they suck)
Google Scholar (citations)
Google Books
Please, use the advanced
search option on any search
engine: Google Advanced
Academic search engines!! So
what? I have Google.
100 research engines for Academics

14. ALERTS
WHY? Cannot I just read a
book, Or research papers in
my field?
YES. You can. But you have to
stay in the loop…
Updated,
Google Scholar ALERTs
ISI Web of Science alerts

15. MINGLE
Be part of the research hype
in your field.
How?
Join online forums,
comminutes, listservs (mailing
lists), etc.
Do not be passive:
Ask them questions
Respond to their questions

16. SCREEN LITERATURE
• Do you accept the author's conclusions? If not, are there other approaches
that could allow you to test their conclusion?
• Does this research suggest new ways to interpret a different problem?
(Could something like this model explain other areas? Other periods of
time? Other types of processes?).
• Are there other problems that could be studied using the same methods?
(And what equipment or expertise is necessary to use these methods?).

17. REVERSE THINKING
Beautiful people can make good models.
Reverse thinking
Ugly people can make good models.

18. REVERSE THINKING
Madness is a mental disorder. It sets mad people apart from normal
people because of the way they interpret reality not because of “how”
they think about it, i.e. the cognitive process. Hence, one can assume that
mad people’s mental processes are as coherent and causal as normal
people's.
Mad people are different from normal people
Reverse thinking
Mad people are the same as normal people

19. TRANSCEND DISCIPLINE
Transdisciplinary
Research
Multidisciplinary
Research
Interdisciplinary
Research
Collaboration in which
exchanging information,
altering discipline-
specific approaches,
sharing resources and
integrating disciplines
achieves a common
scientific goal
(Rosenfield 1992).
Researchers from a
variety of disciplines
work together at some
point during a project,
but have separate
questions, separate
conclusions, and
disseminate in different
journals.
Researchers interact
with the goal of
transferring knowledge
from one discipline to
another. Allows
researchers to inform
each other’s work and
compare individual
findings.

This slide is intended to raise awareness about the frustrating nature of the research process and how the various stages pertaining to academic research are universal and should not stop the researcher from seeking academic visibility via research publications.
