The Red Cross provides humanitarian aid during disasters through disaster relief, preparedness, and health programs. It was established in 1864 to provide medical assistance to victims of war and natural disasters. The Indian Red Cross Society was formed in 1920 and operates nationwide through state and local branches. It coordinates relief efforts during disasters like floods and cyclones by providing shelter, water, food, medical care and evacuation assistance to affected communities. The Society also works on long term preparedness and risk reduction through community programs.

2. International Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement
• An international humanitarian
organization (Red Cross Society)
formally established by the Geneva Convention of
1864 , by Henry Dunant and Gustave Moynier.
• It was originally limited to
providing medical care for war casualties, but
its services now include relief to victims of natural
disasters, etc..
3. IDEA BEHIND ESTABLISHING
• When Henry Dunant arrived in the small town
of Solferino,Italy ,he toured the field of
the Battle of Solferino. In a single day, about
40,000 soldiers on both sides died or were left
wounded on the field. Jean-Henri Dunant was
shocked by the terrible aftermath of the
battle, the suffering of the wounded soldiers,
and the near-total lack of medical attendance
and basic care.
4. • He completely abandoned the original intent
of his trip and for several days he dedicated
himself to helping with the treatment and
care for the wounded. He succeeded in
organizing an overwhelming level of relief
assistance by motivating the local villagers to
aid without discrimination.
5. • Back in his home in Geneva, he decided to
write a book entitled A Memory of
Solferino which he published using his own
money in 1862
• In 1863, Gustave Moynier, a Geneva lawyer
and president of the Geneva Society for Public
Welfare, received a copy of Dunant's book
and examine the feasibility of Dunant's
suggestions and eventually organize an
“International Committee for Relief to the
Wounded".

the Community based Disaster Risk Reduction
(CBDRR) program since 2010 in Andhra
