John Dewey (1859-1952) father of educational philosophy “Education is life itself ” - John Dewey “Arguably the most influential thinker on education in the twentieth century” –(Smith, 1997)
Life of John Dewey Born on October 20, 1859 in Burlington, Vermont Died on June 2, 1952 at age 92 (Field, 2007) John established a laboratory school at the University of Chicago in 1903. At this school he practiced his educational theories (Brewer, 42). Some important books written by Dewey (Olson, 2005): How We Think Democracy and Education Experience and Education A Common Faith
John Dewey American philosopher psychologist, and educational reformer • Founder of philosophical school of “Pragmatism” • Father of “Functional Psychology” • “Educational Progressivism
Dewey in the ECCE Field What may have been most remarkable about John Dewey was his ability to see the extraordinary value of the everyday experience for young children. Children could be found sitting quietly and obediently in their seats, receiving information from their teachers and committing random facts to memory. Even the youngest children participated in household chores and activities, and he quickly recognized the wonderful learning opportunities these everyday experiences provided. He came to believe that the child's own instincts, activities, and interests should be the starting point of education. After receiving his Ph.D. in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University Dewey founded his now-famous Laboratory School at the University of Chicago in 1896. Dewey took advantage of the teachings of early European educators such as Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, who emphasized that children learn by doing Important skills were developed as children were allowed to move freely in and out of the classroom and explore their surroundings Education was truly child-centered-teachers were trained to observe children's interests and help them follow through on those interests.
Dewey believed Curriculum should be based on students’ interests and should involve them in active experiences (Brewer, 42). Active curriculum should be integrated, rather than divided into subject-matter segments (Brewer, 43). Teachers are responsible for achieving the goals of the school, but the specific topics to be studied to meet those goals, cannot be determined in advance because they should be of the interest of the children (Brewer, 43).
“The purpose of education is to enhance individual effectiveness in society and give learners practical knowledge and problem-solving skills”
Dewey’s beliefs and concepts “Dewey's education philosophy helped forward the progressive education movement, and spawned the development of experiential education programs and experiments” (Neill, 2005). Dewey believed that learning was active and schooling was unnecessarily long and restrictive (Neill, 2005) He believed that students should be actively involved in real-life tasks and challenges.
Quotes by John Dewey - “Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is, not a preparation for life; education is life itself”- “The belief that all genuine education comes about through experience does not mean that all experiences are genuinely or equally educative”
