4. Year 5‘s Henry VIII surprise
While year 5 were in the woods and meant to be doing art, a surprisingly unfamiliar voice called out ‘Where is my
horse?’ Mr.Postlethwaite panicked. Mrs Goulden was extremely shocked. All the children looked around to find a
weird man wearing strange clothes, who proclaimed that he was Henry Vlll! Bravely Mrs. Goulden stepped
forward and asked his Majesty if he would answer some questions which the children made up themselves. After
break, Mrs Goulden exclaimed that the children were going to sketch other children in their sketch books, King
Henry kindly offered for the children to sketch him. One of the things King Henry Vlll told us was that he enjoyed
hunting and playing the lyre and the lute. The children tried very hard to get every speck and detail of Henry
down onto their paper inside their sketch books. The children were happy with the end result.
Family Orienteering Day
After the terrific successes of the previous Family Learning Days focussing on Art and Literacy and
on Cooking, our first outdoor venture introduced parents and children to orienteering. Steve
McLean from British Orienteering UK last year worked with some of our Y6 children as part of our
links with Stanley High School Sports College Partnership. They enjoyed it so much that we knew
our parents and children would relish the opportunity of exploring the playground, the field and the
woods as a whole day of map work, only to be halted with a delicious lunch from Josie and Sue in the
kitchen. The response was tremendous with 32 families taking part and so the atmosphere was
superb as some families grew more and more competitive as the day moved on and the skill level
increased. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part, all the staff for putting in
extra time in setting up everything after school and on the day itself and Kim Taylor, the school’s
Parent Support Adviser for organising everything including the weather! We were sorry we had to
disappoint people but will give them first refusal when we run it again next summer.
