Hello and Welcome I’m Foteini Valeonti and this is a presentation on Serious Games and learning.
So what this presentation is all about, is how we can transform a learning experience into a game? Whether this is formal or informal, intentional or not.And the reason we should do this as far as formal education is concerned is because we all have experienced this picture “ Passionate tutor, sleepy students” and this is the freeze of the Yale Law School.
So first of all, what is a game? . . . So we play games to have fun!
Now what is a Serious Game. Serious Games can be found in fields such as
Talking about the power of games, taking as an example a very successful and well designed game like WoW, a dedicated player.. And in case we thought this affects just a specific target group, it seems quite the opposite
Then Why are are games so powerful ? After some research I found..We can see how effective that is, if we consider that when we were kids we were so obsessed with games of any kind from outdoor to board games we would play for days if we were allowed to do so.For everyone who would like to know more on that matter..
.. I suggest reading this great book on game design called A theory of fun for gd” and in particular the 2nd chapter All this chapter is about it explains how games are designed to be an extremely tasty food for our brain.
So, all that power of games didn’t pass unnoticed, and people started using Game Mechs in fields other than gaming.
And nowadays game mechanics can be found everywhere.From the Starbucks Reward Card
To the frequent flyer programmes
Businesses are using game mechanics to increase customer loyalty.
There are hundreds of game mechanics however today we will focus on the most basic ones.
Appointment mechanic in which we have to do a prefedined task at a prescheduled time – it gives us responsibility and we like it.
Another important gm is badges,Because we like to have a role,… So GM are not always used for good.
