the movement as such lasted only

4. INVENTOR OF FAUVISM
French artist Henri Matisse is considered the
founding father of fauvism. Andre Derain, the
co-founder of Fauvism, was a French artist
whose paintings exhibit the writhing energetic
lines and bright colors characteristic of the
movement. He strove to keep art modern and
current throughout his career.

BY?
Fauvism, the first 20th-century movement in modern art,
was initially inspired by the examples of Vincent van
Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Paul Cézanne.

The critics called them a decrease
for art and therefore called them
'The Fauves'. The Fauves means
'Wild Beasts', a name that the
artists of the group excepted with

Matisse.
7. WHY WERE THE FAUVES CALLED
WILD BEASTS?
The name, Les Fauves was actually first used as
a derogatory remark about their work by
French art critic Louis Vauxcelles.
Les Fauves actually means “wild beasts”—it
referred to Matisse and the others' choice of
colors, indicating that their work
was savage and primitive.

A radical use of unnatural colors that separated
color from its usual representational and realistic
role, giving new emotional meaning of colors.
Creating a strong, unified work that appears flat on
the canvas.
