Do we truly know the risks, and do we fully have them under control? The hierarchy of controls have been used to either eliminate or engineer-out a majority of the hazards we face in mining. Or have they? How well does our workforce understand the controls we have in place and why they have been implemented? What are the 'hidden' hazards that still potentially exist behind those layers of protection? How well do we educate our workforce on these controls? Do we simply teach them the controls that are in place, or do we extend the training to explaining why they are in place? Based on experience, observation, conversations and education, this presentation aims to challenge engineers on how well we believe that we educate our teams and provide methods on how to best facilitate the process on knowing all of the risks and not just the ones we can readily see. To strip things back to their basic form in order to understand 'what do we stay safe for?'.
