LO: To consider reasons
why some people do
not believe in life after
death.
Skills:
Empathy
Reasoning
2. 1. Paranormal –
2. Near Death Experience –
3. Reincarnation-
4. Resurrection -
5. Immortality of the Soul –
6. Abortion –
7. Euthanasia –
8. Sanctity of Life –
9. Assisted Suicide -
3. 1. Paranormal – Unexplained things which are thought to have spiritual
causes.
2. Near Death Experience – When somebody about to die has an out of
body experience.
3. Reincarnation-The belief that after death, souls are reborn into a
new body.
4. Resurrection – The belief that after death, the body remains in the
grave until the end of the world when it is raised from the dead.
5. Immortality of the Soul – The idea that the soul lives on after the
death of the body.
6. Abortion – The removal of the foetus from the womb before it can
survive.
7. Euthanasia – The painless killing of someone dying from a painful
disease.
8. Sanctity of Life – The belief that all life is holy and belongs to God.
9. Assisted Suicide – A gentle and easy death.
7. Where might Heaven and Hell actually be?
How might an atheist respond to this?
How might a spiritualist respond?
Is there any proof?
8. In the 21st
century, we expect
science to provide
reliable answers.
Science has so far not
conclusively proved
that life after death
exists.
9. In the 21st
century, we expect
science to provide
reliable answers.
Science has so far not
conclusively proved
that life after death
exists.
If you wanted to
think about it
philosophically, wh
at else has science
not proved about
this topic?
10. Science can analyse accounts of
NDE’s.
• Some say that they are due to
hallucinations caused by a chemical
reaction when the brain is being
starved of oxygen – possibly caused
by drugs in the patient.
• Bright lights and tunnels could be
caused by lack of oxygen also.
• It could be similar to a computer
shutting down.
How is our brain both similar and
different to a computer?
Is it reasonable to compare the
human brain to a computer? Why or
why not?
11. How is our brain both similar
and different to
a computer?
Is it reasonable to compare
the human brain to
a computer?
Why or why not?
12. 1. Using the hand out, write
a brief introduction to this
week’s show.
2. Provide Janice with two
questions likely to get the
audience interested.
3. What will Simon say to
destroy Pam’s story?
4. If Janice was to have a
third guest to give another
view, who would you
suggest and why?
13. Do people just fear the idea of
death?
Why might some people want to
speak to a medium?
How easy is it to imagine someone
who died that you really cared about
standing near you?
Do you think the paranormal is real
or just wishful thinking? Give
reasons with evidence and
explanation.
14. Humanists are people that do not
believe in God and say that ‘you only
live once’.
They believe the only way we can
live on is:
• Through people’s memories
• The work we have done while we
were alive
• In our children
• Our molecules which will still
remain part of the natural world.
15. It is a scientific fact that you can
never destroy energy.
When someone dies, their
remains, whether buried or
cremated, creates nutrients for
compost to provide life for new
plants.
Do you think that this ‘green’ idea
of changing energy into something
else could be classed as life after
death? Give two reasons to support
your viewpoint.
16. ‘When you’re dead, you’re dead. There
is no such thing as life after death.’
(i) Do you agree? Give reasons for your opinion. (3)
(ii) Give reasons why some people may disagree
with you. (3)
