How do you say... in English?
What does... mean?
How do you spell...?
I'm not sure.
Sorry, I don't understand.
What did you get for question number one?
What's your answer for number two?
3. Starter Unit: Learning to listen.
Goals ● Identifying different types of listening
TASK 1. Before listening, it's useful to think about the topic and focus on the key words
and expressions that you are likely to hear.
A. Each of the people has difficulty listening in English. Check (√) the boxes next to the problems you
share.
B. These words appear frequently in the Listen In series. Do you know what they mean? If not, check
with a partner or look them up in a dictionary.
compare pronunciation repeat intonation identify
expression brainstorm role play syllable recognize
C. Brainstorm! Work with a partner. List two or three other problems you have with listening in
English.
TASK 2. We listen for many reasons. For example, we sometimes listen to get the gist of
what we are hearing. That means we try to understand in general what is being talked
about. ♫
4. A. Listen and number the pictures (1-4). ♫
B. Listen again. What are the people talking about? Circle the correct answer for each. ♫
TASK 3. Sometimes we listen to get the main idea of what is being said. Sometimes we
listen for key details. ♫
A. Listen to the conversations and check (√) the main idea for each one. ♫
1. ….. Carol is looking for the new job ...... Carol likes her new job.
2. ...... Adam doesn't want to get married. ….. Adam is getting married.
3. ...... Keiko bought a car. ….. Keiko sold her car.
4. ….. Jim can't go to the party. ...... Jim doesn't like parties.
5. ….. Andrea can't find her wallet. ...... Andrea found a lost wallet.
B. Listen again and fill in the correct details. ♫
1. Carol studied _________ at university.
2. Adam is _________ years old.
3. Keiko is using her _________ car.
4. Jim finishes work at _________ o'clock tomorrow night.
5. Andrea's _________ arrives in five minutes.
TASK 4. In real life, people don't just listen, they listen and do something, such as
deciding what to wear after hearing a weather report. In this task, you are listening to three
people and making a decision based on what you hear. ♫
A. Three people are talking about the methods they use to improve their listening skills. Listen and fill
in the blanks. ♫
- Gloria: I listen to a lot of __________________. I also spend time __________________.
- Francisco: One of the things I do is listen to __________________. Another is to just walk up to
__________________ and start a conversation.
- Min-hee: I've got all kinds of __________________ that I use to practice. Oh, and I also listen to the
__________________ on the radio.
5. B. Listen again and check your answers. Which methods are you going to use to improve your listening
skills? Write them down, and share with a partner. ♫
TASK 5. Listening sometimes means focusing not just on what people say, but also the
way they say it. This means paying attention to pronunciation, stress, sentence rhythm, and
intonation. In this task, you are listening for the speaker's intonation. ♫
A. Listen to the examples. In which one is the speaker surprised? Circle the correct answer. ♫
Example 1: She's the boss.
Example 2: She's the boss?!
Listen and decide if the people are stating a fact or expressing surprise. Circle F for Fact or S for Surprise.
1. She's your teacher?! F S
2. I'm her student. F S
3. It can't be mine! F S
4. He's not listening. F S
5. We're leaving tonight?! F S
6. Oh, no! It's already ten to three! F S
B. Listen again and practice. ♫
TASK 6. In real life, people typically respond to what they hear. In this task, you are
listening to questions and deciding on your own response. ♫
Listen and circle the answers that are right for you. ♫
1. Yes, I do. I don't mind it. No, not really.
2. Listening Speaking Writing Reading
3. They talk too fast. They use a lot of slang. I can't understand all the words.
Your Turn! [07:58]

In Focus:
Why study English? ♫
English is widely known as the language of international trade but doing business isn't the only reason to learn
the language. There are probably almost as many reason to study English as there are people who want to learn
it. Some people study English to help them get a good job. Others are preparing to travel to English-speaking
countries. What's the main reason that you're studying English?
- I'm studying to pass my entrance exam for college.
- I work at a hotel so I have to speak English to our guests.
- I just want to understand more of the dialog in Hollywood movies.

Task 2 – AB
1. M: 37,000 fans came out to the park Thursday to see the Knights crush the Blazers 12-1. It was the third largest
crowd for a Knights game this year. The scoring began in the first inning, when Knights first baseman Rich
Damien hit a 500-foot home run over the center field fence...
2. W1: Hello?
W2: Hello, Arlene? It's Bridget.
W1: Bridget, hi. I was just about to call you about Friday. Are we still going to that new place on Third Street?
W2: You mean Farrell's? Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. My sister had dinner there last week and she said it
was the best meal she's ever had.
3. M1: So, Todd, it says here you went to Hunter. How was that?
M2: Oh, it was great. It's definitely the place to go to study business.
M1: Yes, a lot of our employees got their degrees at Hunter. What did you think of their business program?
M2: I thought it was the best. I'm really proud to be a Hunter graduate.
4. W: Hey Dave, I heard you got tickets to the show on Saturday.
M: Yeah, I can't wait. Geiger is one of my favorite bands.
W: Year, mine, too. And their live shows are great. No one plays guitar like Steve Geiger.
Task 3 – AB
1. M: Carol, have you seen today's newspaper?
W: It's right here. I'm just reading the want-ads.
M: Oh. Are you thinking about changing jobs?
W: Yeah, but I'm not sure what kind of job I want.
M: Well, what did you study in college?
W: Spanish.
M: Well, maybe you could get a job as a language teacher.
2. M: Look what we got in the mail today, Evelyn.
W: What is it? An invitation?
M: A wedding invitation. From Adam!
W: What?! I can't imagine Adam with a wife! How old is he? Fifty?
M: Fifty-two. And he's lived alone since he was 17.
3. M: Is that your car out front, Keiko?
W: No, it's my father's. I don't have a car anymore.
M: What do you mean? What happened to that white Ford you used to drive?
W: Oh, that's my brother's car now.
M: You gave it to him?!
W: No, he bought it for $200.
4. W: Jim, don't forget we're going to that party at the Carlyle's tomorrow night.
M: What's tomorrow? Friday?
W: That's right. You're not working, are you?
M: Actually, I am. And I don't finish until ten o'clock.
W: Well, the Carlyle's party starts at seven.
M: Well then, you'd better call and tell them we won't be there.
5. W1: Andrea! Haven't you left yet? The school bus gets here in five minutes! [03:39]
W2: I just came back to get my wallet. But now I can't find it anywhere. Can you help me look for it?
W1: Did you check your jacket pocket?
W2: Yeah, it's not there.
Task 4 – AB
W: Welcome to English class, everyone. My name is Gillian and I'm your teacher. This is a class on listening, so the first
thing I want to do is hear some of the methods you use to practice your listening skills. Mmm... What's your name,
please?
P1: Gloria.
W: Hi, Gloria. Do you have any advice for your classmates on how to improve your listening skills?
P1: Well, I really like music so I listen to a lot of English songs. I try to understand the words and sometimes I even learn
how to sing them.
8. W: That's great. Anything else, Gloria?
P1: Um... I also spend time watching movies. I like to learn new English words and Hollywood movies have a lot of slang
expressions.
W: That's another good method. Someone else? Yes.
P2: My name's Francisco. One of the things I do is listen to books on tape. I like to listen and read the book at the same
time. It really helps my pronunciation.
W: That's a good idea. Are there any other things you do, Francisco?
P2: Well... another is just to walk up to English speakers and start a conversation. I leave them alone if they don't want
to talk, but most people don't mind chatting for a few minutes.
W: Alright. Are there any other ideas? Yes.
P3: Hi, I'm Min-hee. Um... I've got all kinds of listening tests that I use to practice. I listen to the tape, take the test and
then check my answers in the back of the test book.
W: OK. Taking tests is another way to practice. Do you use any other methods, Min-hee?
P3: Let me think... Oh, I also listen to the news in English on the radio. At first it was really difficult but after a while, I
started hearing more words that I knew.
W: That's a good method, too. OK, let's hear from some other people...
