3. Starter Unit: Learning to listen.
 Goals ● Identifying different types of listening
TASK 1. Before listening, it's useful to think about the topic and focus on the key words
and expressions that you are likely to hear.
A. Each of the people has difficulty listening in English. Check (√) the boxes next to the problems you
share.
B. These words appear frequently in the Listen In series. Do you know what they mean? If not, check
with a partner or look them up in a dictionary.

TASK 2. We listen for many reasons. For example, we sometimes listen to get the gist of
what we are hearing. That means we try to understand in general what is being talked

TASK 4. In real life, people don't just listen, they listen and do something, such as
deciding what to wear after hearing a weather report. In this task, you are listening to three

way they say it. This means paying attention to pronunciation, stress, sentence rhythm, and
intonation. In this task, you are listening for the speaker's intonation. ♫

In Focus:
Why study English? ♫
English is widely known as the language of international trade but doing business isn't the only reason to learn
the language. There are probably almost as many reason to study English as there are people who want to learn
it. Some people study English to help them get a good job. Others are preparing to travel to English-speaking
countries. What's the main reason that you're studying English?
- I'm studying to pass my entrance exam for college.
- I work at a hotel so I have to speak English to our guests.
- I just want to understand more of the dialog in Hollywood movies.

thing I want to do is hear some of the methods you use to practice your listening skills. Mmm... What's your name,

P1: Gloria.
W: Hi, Gloria. Do you have any advice for your classmates on how to improve your listening skills?
P1: Well, I really like music so I listen to a lot of English songs. I try to understand the words and sometimes I even learn
how to sing them.

8. W: That's great. Anything else, Gloria?
P1: Um... I also spend time watching movies. I like to learn new English words and Hollywood movies have a lot of slang
expressions.
W: That's another good method. Someone else? Yes.
P2: My name's Francisco. One of the things I do is listen to books on tape. I like to listen and read the book at the same
time. It really helps my pronunciation.
W: That's a good idea. Are there any other things you do, Francisco?
P2: Well... another is just to walk up to English speakers and start a conversation. I leave them alone if they don't want
to talk, but most people don't mind chatting for a few minutes.
W: Alright. Are there any other ideas? Yes.
P3: Hi, I'm Min-hee. Um... I've got all kinds of listening tests that I use to practice. I listen to the tape, take the test and
then check my answers in the back of the test book.
W: OK. Taking tests is another way to practice. Do you use any other methods, Min-hee?
P3: Let me think... Oh, I also listen to the news in English on the radio. At first it was really difficult but after a while, I
started hearing more words that I knew.
