9. Which Resources (Databases)?
Points to consider:
1) Does it cover the desired subject area?
2) Does it contain the key resources?
3) What is the time span for coverage?
4) What types of resources does it cover?
5) Overlap with other resources, unique content?

11. Structured Search Methodology
1. Have a research topic in the form of question
2. Isolate the concepts
3. Search concepts separately (Using OR)
4. Combine concept sets (Using AND)
5. Evaluate results and refine
6. Apply limits if necessary
11
12. Sample article
Zheng F, Zhan C-G. (2012). Modeling of
Pharmacokinetics of Cocaine in Human Reveals the
Feasibility for Development of Enzyme Therapies
for Drugs of Abuse. PLoS Comput Biol,
DOI: 10.1371/journal.pcbi.1002610
12
13. Abstract
" A promising strategy for drug abuse treatment is to accelerate the drug
metabolism by administration of a drug-metabolizing enzyme. The
question is how effectively an enzyme can actually prevent the drug from
entering brain and producing physiological effects. In the present study,
we have developed a pharmacokinetic model through a combined use of in
vitro kinetic parameters and positron emission tomography data in human
to examine the effects of a cocaine-metabolizing enzyme in plasma on the
time course of cocaine in plasma and brain of human. …It has been
demonstrated that administration of a cocaine hydrolase/esterase
(CocH/CocE) can considerably decrease the cocaine half-lives in both brain
and plasma, ….The estimated maximum cocaine plasma concentration
which a given concentration of drug-metabolizing enzyme can effectively
prevent from entering brain and producing physiological effects can be
used to guide future preclinical/clinical studies on cocaine-metabolizing
enzymes. ….”
13
14. What is the Question?
What is the role of drug metabolising enzymes in the
treatment of cocaine abuse?
Identify the main keywords
drug-metabolizing enzyme
cocaine abuse
14
15. Simple Search in Google Scholar
drug-metabolizing enzyme
AND cocaine abuse
How many hits?
15
16. Simple Search in PubMed
drug-metabolizing enzyme AND
cocaine abuse
drug metabolism AND enzyme AND
cocaine abuse
Not about enzyme therapy thought!
16
18. Pearl methodology framework
Step 1: Choosing a Representative Sample
of Articles
Step 2: Extracting the Relevant Search
Keywords and expanding on them
Step 3: Refining the List of Search Keywords
Step 4: Validating the Search Keywords
(Sandienson, 2011)
18
19. Synonyms, related terms, variant
spellings, truncation and wildcards
When designing a search strategy, in order to be as
comprehensive as possible, it is necessary to
include a wide range of keyword terms for each of
the concepts selected. For example:
synonyms:
related terms:
variant spellings:
truncation and wildcards:
truncation: random* (for random or randomised
or randomized or randomly, etc); and
wildcard: behavio?r (for behaviour or behavior).
21. Databases
• Search syntax varies across interfaces.
• Subject heading varies across databases.
– Subject heading = MeSH= Descriptors = Control
vocabulary = ...
• Search strategy has to be tailored for each database.
– *Tip: For further details refer to the “Help” files
for the database in question.
Developing a search strategy is an iterative process!

45. What is RefWorks?
Personal bibliographic citation managers
Save citations as you search
Organize your research, Include citations while
you write your paper
Import references from many data sources
including databases, the UWO catalogue, even
from web pages
Create bibliographies
Share citations with friends, colleagues,
students, etc.
46. Why Use RefWorks?
free to all UWO faculty, staff, and students
web-based so available anywhere and anytime
data is stored on a server in Toronto
data is backed up every night so you will not lose
your data
47. Create a Folder
References organization by default:
o Last imported folder
o References not in a folder
o Deleted references (deleted references will
store here for 30 days)
47
50. Direct import
This will automatically launch RefWorks and
store the citations in your "Last Imported"
folder. Direct export functionality is available
from most database providers. e.g. SCOPUS
Tutorial available at:
http://www.lib.uwo.ca/taylor/grad/intro_refworks_import.shtml
51. Indirect Import
References have to be imported into RefWorks
from a text file (txt.) created by saving references
from a wide variety of online services and other
bibliographic management programs. Text file will
be imported into RefWorks via specific filters. e.g.
PubMed

53. Using Write-N-Cite
Enables you to incorporate citations into your
paper while you write. Automatically
generates a bibliography when you're
done. Please watch the following video
