Sentences purpose and Simple Sentence
What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that contains at least a subject and a verb and
expresses completed thought.
Examples:
- Jonh works in the bank.
- I always kill my homework at the weekend.
- We study at Norton University.
I. Sentence purpose:
We use end of the sentence punctuation according to kind of sentence purposes.
How many function of a sentence purpose?
There are four functions of a sentence purpose:
1. Declarative sentences state the ideas and end with a period or full stop(.).
Examples:
- I go to school.
- She went to the super market last evening.
- He plays football with his friends.

Giving information.
Examples:
- We have breakfast at 8:00 am.
- She studies English major.
- I like volleyball sport.
Expressing opinions.
Examples:
- I think we should try to study hard if we want to pass our exams
- I think you are best in this class.
- I think this book is good meaning.
Making promises.
Examples:
- She will help me to do an Assignment.
- If you don’t have transport to school, I will take you.
- I love you forever.
Emphasis.
We can emphasize a statement by putting “do”, “does”, or “did” in front of the
baseform of the verb.

Examples:
- I do feel sorry for the accident which happened at KohPich in 2011.
- He had no time or energy to play with his children or talk with his wife, but he
did bring home a regular salary.
2. Exclamatory sentences show strong emotions (feeling, surprise, or disbelief)
and end with an exclamation mark (!).
Examples:
- I can’t believe you left the car at the station overnight!
- How beautiful you are!
3. Interrogative sentences ask a question and end with a question mark (?).
Examples:
- Where do you go?
- What did you do last night?
- What do you plan in the future?
Don’t use question mark with indirect question in the case, it becomes
interrogative.
Examples:
- I am not sure when you called me. (Interrogative sentence)
- I wonder when you are going to visit. (Interrogative sentence)

4. Imperative sentences give order or makes a request or offers and with a period or
exclamation.(.!)
Examples:
- Give me a book.
- Save your money!
- Help!
Orders and Instructions:
Order:
Examples:
- Stop her.
- Put that gun down.
Instructions:
Example:
Chicken soup: cut up the chicken. Peel the carrots. Slice the carrots. Boil the
chicken. Add vegetables. Simmer for 1 hour.
Advice and warnings:
Examples:
- Be sensible! Be careful!
- Don’t be afraid of them.

Appeals:
We use the imperative sentences when you are appealing to someone to do
something.
Examples:
- Come quickly…come quickly….Hurry!
- Do help me out!
- Hurry up please!
Letis use in imperative sentence.
Examples:
- Let’s go outside.
- Let me take my coat.
- Let me see beautiful girls.
Note: normally imperative sentence ends with full stop However, when we use
strong command; we end this sentence with exclamation point (!).
Examples:
- Shut up!
- Get your football out of my garden immediately!

II. Simple sentence:
A simple sentence has one independent clause and no dependent clauses. A simple
contains at least one subject and one predicate. It may have a compound subject, a
compound predicate, and various phrases, but it has only one clause.
A simple sentence can consist of:
1 Subject + 1 Verb + (Complement). SV
Examples:
- Wego to study English at Norton University.
- The horseeats grass.
- Shespeaks English language.
1 Subject + 2 Verbs + (Complement). SVV
Examples:
- The horseeats grass and drinks water.
- She eats rice and cleans something.
- He drives and listens to music.
2 Subjects + 1 Verb + (Complement). SSV
Examples:
- DaraandSopheastay at home.
- Horses and cowseat grass.
- The children and their parentssmiled at us.

Several Subjects + Several Verbs + (Complement). SSVV

- The children and their parentslaughed and smiled at us.
- Sok, Som and Sanlubricated my car, replaced the oil filter, and cleaned the
spark plugs.
- The children, their parents and their friends laughed, smiled and waved at
us.
