The Israeli Perspective of the 2006 War in Lebanon. This presentation was first presented at an event that took place in October 2006, at Florida State University in Tallahassee, where Israelis and Lebanese met to tell their story of the 2006 War.

Summer of 2006 War
On July 12, 2006 the G-7 Summit was supposed to meet to discuss sanctions against Iran,
following Iran’s rejection of the ultimatum to discontinue Uranium enrichment
Iran made sure world attention would be shifted to another direction…
the war in Lebanon began on that same date the G-7 Summit was supposed to take place

This presentation is intended to present the Israeli perspective of the War (or at least a glimpse of it…)

3. Some background points about the
Israeli perspective…
• Israel withdrew from Lebanon in 2000 in hope of
having a peaceful border
• Lebanon was supposed to take control of its
borders and disarm Hezbollah (According to UN
supported international agreements)
But unfortunately:
– Lebanon did not take control of the border
– The Lebanese government did not disarm
Hezbollah and allowed it to build up
– Over the years Hezbollah built up and
accumulate 12,000 missiles, and remains
committed (Explicitly) to the destruction of
Israel, and to the transformation of Lebanon
into an Islamic State , inspired and
supported by Iran.
– And this 2006 war, as much as it “surprised”
everyone, should have been expected.

4. The people in Israel were taken by
complete surprise
Over the past six years, since the
withdrawal from Lebanon
tourism and business were
flourishing, the border was
generally very peaceful
But that changed this summer…
• Hezbollah crossed the border
kidnapped two soldiers, and killed 8
other soldiers
• Israel retaliated with a counter attack
• Hezbollah replied with a total of 3,970
Rockets targeting civilians, shot across
the northern part of Israel
• 44 Israeli civilians were killed
• 119 Israeli soldiers were killed
• Hundreds of Israelis were wounded
• Billions of Dollars in Economic damage
• About 500,000 Israelis fled out of their
homes to southern Israel. Others were
living in fear in their bomb shelters for a
month

15. Most Israelis are very concerned about Iran, and the existential threat
that it is posing on the State of Israel by its imminent nuclear arming.
The Hezbollah is its front line army on the Israeli border…

4 years later, in 2010, Hezbollah has rebuilt its power (and more), against all
agreements signed at the end of the 2006 war whereby the Lebanese
government was supposed to stop the smuggling of weapons into Lebanon.
Hezbollah now has Rockets that reach Tel Aviv (provided by Iran) and the
world is still hesitant about sanctions against Iran…???? !!!!
