In this presentation, we discuss the integration pf OpenSyllabus, a scenario creation tool, to EMAEVAL, a competency management and gradebook tool. OpenSyllabus proposes a model-based approach to create simple scenarios to describe activities, actors and resources (competencies, files, evaluation rubrics, comments, etc.). EMAEVAL offers extensive functionalities to describe competencies frameworks, coordinate the actors’ tasks including those of the tutors, validate students’ competencies, produce summary reports and emit proficiency certificates according to simple or elaborate rules. This integration offers a very nice flexibility for learning scenarios yet preserving a very robust back-end to monitor students’ accomplishments.

Campus news feed offers varying level of granularity, where the system is broken into small parts; there is a level of hierarchy from students to faculty and from faculty to principal and so on. It enables to have up-to-date information anywhere once they have the app installed and an active internet connection. If the website provides updates, all you need to do is install it on android phone with an active internet connection. You can then use any Campus news feed which checks for updated content frequently and displays it to you. CollegeSync allows users to create a list of those sources in an application that automatically retrieves updates, saving consider-able time and effort. An excellent mechanism for distributing regularly updated content, photo-sharing applications, and podcasts.

The OERPub team is making it easy to create and edit OER and expanding the options for publishing and sharing content. Last year we created an importer that takes content from Word, Google Docs, and blogs and makes it remixable by unifying the formats. We then used simple software hooks to publish the content to repositories like Connexions. This year are adding an easy-to-use, open source document editor so that authors can create content from scratch or edit the content they imported. We are incorporating research-driven principles so that authors used to Word and Google Docs can still create beautiful remixable content. Rather than asking authors to learn complicated markup, we are using authors’ natural actions to provide just-in-time semantic choices and convenient templates for editing. We are expanding the options for sharing OER (while still keeping it remixable) by making it possible to publish to institutional repositories as well as other projects that provide structured publishing like Connexions, Siyavula, Booktype and Open University. The underlying editor is built collaboratively and intended for use by many projects. In this presentation we will unveil our design for a new collaboratively created open-source editor for OER and show how it can be used to create, edit, and publish content to OER libraries. We will highlight the research principles that were used to guide the editing experience and also show how other projects have participated with us and how new projects can get involved and incorporate the editor and adapt it for their content. The talk will be mostly non-technical focusing on the how and why, with pointers to the technical meat for reference.

Open Textbooks : Creation and Remixing Made Easy

This is my talk at the Open Course Ware Conference in Cambridge UK, April 2012. It is quite dense, since it was a 15 minute talk. It illustrates my work to make it easier to create remixable education content. To remix content it is helpful to have a format that emphasizes semantics and structure. We are starting to work on an open source editor that helps authors either create content from scratch or import and then add nice structure and semantics without undue pain.
