Enlightenment, or “Bodhi”
in both Pali and Sanskrit, is
also known as Awakening.
It’s being Awakened to the
true nature of all things, to
be free from ignorance and
delusion that cause
suffering.

After the Great Renunciation at
29, Siddhartha Gautama, became
a spiritual seeker. He spent six
years practicing with different
teachers and subjecting himself
to extreme austerities. He
eventually came to realize that
asceticism would not bring
liberation from Dukkha.

Then Siddhartha remembered an
experience he had had as a boy,
when he had spontaneously
entered a deep and joyful
meditative state. It occurred to him
that the same kind of meditative
state might help him gain the
insight he was looking for.

After His Enlightenment, The
Buddha spent the next 45 years of
His life sharing the Path of practice
that leads to Awakening (The Noble
8-Fold Path) so that others could
work to attain the same state of
Enlightenment—freedom from
suffering and Samsara—
as He had attained.

Enlightenment – A Meaningful Zen Story (1)
There was a young man who was
constantly searching
for Enlightenment.
He traveled far and wide to meet
with wise teachers,
read many books
and practice various
spiritual disciplines
Despite his efforts he still felt like
he was missing something.
Enlightenment – A Meaningful Zen Story (2)
One day he came across an old Zen
Master who was sitting
by the side of the road.
The young man asked the Master,
“How can I find Enlightenment?”
The Master replied, “Enlightenment is
like the sun. It is always shining
but sometimes, clouds get in the way
and we cannot see it.
If you want to see the sun, you must first
learn to clear away the clouds.”

The young man was confused and
asked, “How do I clear away
the clouds?”
The Zen Master replied, “The clouds
are the thoughts and emotions that
clutter your mind. You must learn to
let go of them and be present in the
moment. Only then will you be able
to see the Sun of Enlightenment.

The young man was grateful for
this wisdom and
left feeling inspired.
He realized that Enlightenment
was not something
to be achieved
but rather a state of mind that
could be accessed by
letting go of distractions
and being fully present
in the moment.”

11. 11
From that day on the young man
practiced mindfulness and
meditation and he
gradually began to experience
moments of Enlightenment.
He realized that the journey to
Enlightenment was not a destination
but a way of life
and that the key to unlocking it was
to be fully present in the moment.
