4. What is Brainstorming?
Brainstorming is a tool used by teams to
bring out the ideas of each individual and
present them in an orderly fashion to the
rest of the team.
It recognizes the principle that our brains
are ‘pattern recognition systems’ and
that we sometimes get ‘stuck’ with
patterns and think within them versus
outside of them.
5. HISTORY
In 1941 Alex Osborn, an advertising
executive, found that conventional
business meetings were inhibiting the
creation of new ideas.
He was looking for rules which would
give people the freedom of mind to
spark off and reveal new ideas.

It expands thinking to include all aspects of
a problem or a solution.

Is using a structured or logical framework to

Is about jumping outside the traditional
patterns that we use to solve problems.

20. Review the ground rules
Set a time limit for Brainstorming
Brainstorming should be a rapid
generation of ideas, so do it quickly; 5-15
minutes works well. If the time limit has
expired and ideas are still being
generated, you can extend the time limit
at five-minute intervals.
21. State the topic to be brainstormed in the
form of a question
Written, everyone can see it and
understand it
Collect everyone’s ideas
Allow few minutes for the participants to
think about the question
Structured or unstructured format for calling
out ideas
22. Record ideas and display them where
everyone can see
- To avoid misinterpretation and duplication
and stimulate creative thinking by others
- Written down exactly as spoken by the
team member, don’t interpret
-Try to generate a long list as possible
