Groupon recently completed a year-long project to migrate its U.S. web traffic from a monolithic Ruby on Rails application to a new multi-application stack with substantial results. Groupon’s entire U.S. web frontend had been a single Rails codebase from its inception in 2008. The frontend codebase quickly grew large, which made it difficult to maintain and challenging to ship new features. As a solution to this gigantic monolith, we decided to re-architect the frontend by splitting it into small, independent and more manageable pieces. At the center of this project, we rebuilt each major section of the website as an independent application. We also rebuilt the infrastructure to make all the independent apps work together. Interaction Tier (I-Tier) was the result. Learn about how Groupon achieved this great architecture migration and the business results it is driving.

Several customers might each ask "How do I make Jira/Confluence faster?" and each require a different answer. Using this example, this talk will pick apart the inputs, outputs, concerns, and realities of answering a short question with a long answer. We'll then discuss real-world examples from our own internal instances, to give you a taste of the process we've gone through to solve our own performance problems, and to show why there is no simple playbook; "it depends" on a lot! By turning the data center into an API, AWS has enabled Sumo Logic to build a very large scale IT operational analytics platform as a service at unprecedented scale and velocity. Based around Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3, the Sumo Logic system is ingesting many terabytes of unstructured log data a day while at the same time delivering real-time dashboards and supporting hundreds of thousands of queries against the collected data. When co-founder and CTO Christian Beedgen started Sumo Logic, it was obvious that the service would have to scale quickly and elastically, and AWS has been providing the perfect infrastructure for this endeavor from the start. In this talk, Christian dives into the core Sumo Logic architecture and explains which AWS services are making Sumo Logic possible. Based around an in-house developed automation and continuous deployment system, Sumo Logic is leveraging Amazon S3 in particular for large-scale data management and Amazon DynamoDB for cluster configuration management. By relying on automation, Sumo Logic is also able to perform sophisticated staging of new code for rapid deployment. Using the log-based instrumentation of the Sumo Logic codebase, Christian will dive into the performance characteristics achieved by the system today and share war stories about lessons learned along the way.

Ever since distributed software became popular, developers have been choosing whether to use monolithic architectures or service-oriented architectures. With the advancement of cloud infrastructure and the widespread implementation of agile methodologies, the latter approach has been getting much easier. David Litvak describes how a monolithic application—due to its ever increasing technical debt—can become too big to support. He explores how to gradually reduce the size by extracting its components into smaller services, so ultimately the application is decoupled and highly distributed. David describes the current situation of cloud services and software as a service providers, offering a list of these providers for many different uses. He shares an example of an e-commerce site implementation, starting with a full-blown traditional rails monolith and then moving toward a static site with automated rebuilds with CircleCI, Contentful as a decoupled CMS, Auth0 for authentication, and Snipcart as an e-Commerce as a Service provider. Join David as he shares how to create an architecture from interconnected services.

FMs have managed to get a lot of attention due to this feature of handling large datasets. It can do text generation, video editing to protein folding and robotics. In case we believe that FMs can help the hospitals and patients in any way, we need to perform some important evaluations, tests to test these assumptions. In this review, we take a walk through Fms and their evaluation regimes assumed clinical value. To clarify on this topic, we reviewed no less than 80 clinical FMs built from the EMR data. We added all the models trained on structured and unstructured data. We are referring to this combination of structured and unstructured EMR data or clinical data.

Data spaces in distributed environments should be allowed to evolve in agile ways providing data space owners with large flexibility about which data they store. Agility and heterogeneity, however, jeopardize data exchanges because representations may build on varying ontologies and data consumers may not rely on the semantic correctness of their queries in the context of semantically heterogeneous, evolving data spaces. Graph data spaces are one example of a powerful model for representing and querying data whose semantics may change over time. To assert and enforce conditions on individual graph data spaces, shape languages (e.g SHACL) have been developed. We investigate the question of how querying and programming can be guarded by reasoning over SHACL constraints in a distributed setting and we sketch a picture of how a future landscape based on semantically heterogeneous data spaces might look like.
