2. What’stheDifference?
Intrinsic Motivation
Comes from within - autonomous
Self-driven to achieve goals – learns for the sake of
learning and enjoys the process
Can lead to better performance and greater satisfaction
• Extrinsic Motivation
Comes from an external source – teachers, coaches,
managers, etc.
Driven by external rewards (e.g. grades, trophies,
paychecks, etc.)
Lack of sincere interest can lead to poorer performance

• Michael Jordan was motivated from within to
better himself and to prove not only to others,
but also to himself, that he was the best.

In this video, eating is the extrinsic motivation
that was needed for Po to learn how to do Kung
Fu.
5. In our day to day lives we experience our
intrinsic motivation in various ways. For
example, in completing school an intrinsic
motivation would be the knowledge that
completing school will give you more
knowledge and skills. You are motivated to
finish because you as a person have been
improved through education.
Use this to empower you in your studies, no
matter the outcome of a particular assignment
you are learning and improving yourself!
6. Extrinsic motivation in this instance represents
the monetary reason for completing your
education. You want to finish college and earn a
degree so that you can qualify for a job in which
you earn more money and receive better
benefits.
Use this to your advantage when completing
assignments, "If I work hard and do well, then I
will get a better grade"
