3. 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,
DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF
REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS? (I.E. OF MUSIC MAGAZINES)
• One convention I have used is the having the photograph of the band. This advertises the band and the
audience know what the Magazine’s about. The band is aimed at young people. The front cover gives away
the Genre immediately. The look of the Magazine tells the audience that it is a Music Magazine.
• The second convention used is a three column grid (like a Newspaper layout). I shows the Magazine to be
professional and it’s easy to follow. I have put in the page numbers to make it easy to follow to.
• The third is a challenging convention - the photograph of the band is in Black and White denoting the Indie
status. The front cover shows the band looking outwards - towards the audience - direct and self assured.
The bands clothing brings out their originality and independence.
• The effect that this has on the Media Industry is that it allows the larger, more successful companies to
control and have ownership over the Magazine Genre. This also allows them to be influential on the other
smaller companies, meaning that they’ll look up to them, wanting to them to copy their house -style and
content.
4. 2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
• My Magazine represent’s the Indie Genre by using a certain style. I’ve used very similar colours. I think that
these colours are best suited for my style of Magazine because it’s a new and fresh look. My colour scheme
is simple, use of Grey colours Black, Grey and White, and no bold statements of colours.
• The images that I’ve used also work together with the colour palette with the Black and White effect. Adding
a striking photo on the front of the cover draws attention to the Magazine and make it stand out from the
others. It also set’s the theme and give the reader the idea of the content, without the use of words.
• My Magazine represents the Indie scene by being individual and not conforming to everyday
fashions, idea’s and conventions. The Magazine is creative which is representative if the group I am aiming
at. The Indie scene is creative in the way people dress and wear there make-up.
• The age range of my readers would be 15-20 year olds. This is the age that are most influenced by fashion
and what there favorite bands might be wearing/doing.
• With my Magazine I used, what I thought to be, the general style for the Indie Genre. I tried to incorporate
the newest and most edgy way’s, making my Front Cover look the most matching towards the Genre, I did
this by researching other Magazine’s of the same style and tried to imitate there style.
5. 3. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
• For my Magazine I think that companies like Kerrang would produce it as I’ve based a lot
of design of the Magazine, and the contents, on what’s inside there’s.
• Frontline would be a publisher of choice to distribute my Magazine. Frontline sells
Magazine’s through 55,000 retailers across the United Kingdom. Frontline has four
partners, Seymour, Haymarket, BBC Enterprises and H Bailer Publishing. By having four
partners it increases the Market share and dominates the industry.
• Frontline also caters for all Genres and their most popular Magazine they distribute is
Heat. This would be a popular choice as their Magazine’s are generally aimed at young
people, the people who would buy the Magazine. Also, Frontline has a larger target
market and is able to sell my Magazine in larger retail store e.g. Sainsbury’s, so this
would be accessible for a large number of people.
6. 4. WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT?
• The audience that would buy my Magazine would be the ‘Indie’ type of person. They
would be in their teens or the their twenty’s - who try hard not to be like everyone else.
They’re creative in their forms of fashion sense and creative as people. Their clothes are
monotone and not mainstream. They enjoy Music of unheard bands and not listening to
popular Music. The term ‘Indie’ means independent - wanting to move away from the
norm.
• The band I’ve got on the front cover look new and exciting. They’re are also standing in
an abnormal position with a different effect on. This makes the Magazine stand out more
also it advertise’s the band in a way that in keeps with House-Style of the Magazine.
7. 5. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
• To attract an audience you need to be different. You need to stand out from the rest of the other
magazine’s. I used a variety of colours and a striking photo. These 2 go well together because
they add a contrast.
• Using words for emphasis like ‘Exclusive’ attracts the audience. They see words like this and
become interested with what’s within the magazine.
• I addressed my audience that they would be a custom to using the same language they would
read in other Magazine’s of the same Genre. I also used the same layout that other Magazine’s
would use. This helps draw in readers because they’ll instantaneously recognize the style of
Magazine and want too read on.
• My Magazine would appeal to my target audience by attracting them with the style. They’ll see
it and instantaneously recognize that it’s Indie. I also addressed my Target Audience by trying to
adopt the style of writing making it more custom to the other Magazine’s of the same Genre out
there.
8. 6. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM
THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
• Through out the course of the project, my knowledge and skills on Photoshop have advanced. Photoshop is
commonly known as a professional photo editing suite, I’m understanding that the program can be used for
much more than that.
• I’ve also furthered my skills with a Digital Camera. Before, I could take basic photo’s without thinking about
what’s in the background. I taught myself this skill and to gain a better understanding of it I researched it by
Googling other Magazine’s and seeing how they portrayed their artist’s.
• I also learnt that some technique’s enable you to further the quality of your photo and final outcome. For
example, you may be able to do all effects known too Photoshop, but you need to know which one’s look the
best with each other.
• Photoshop really helped me in the fact that it has very in depth editing tools. I didn’t use any templates at
all, meaning that all the work I’d done, was of my own. The text tool was one of the main tools I used. I
downloaded external font’s from other sites to make the Magazine look more professional. The tool I used to
the most though was the Black & White tool, but with this tool there is a trick. If you duplicate it and erase
the parts you want in colours, you get part’s of the photo in Black & White and the other parts in the colour.
9. 7. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK (THE
CONTINUITY EDITING TASK), WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE
LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO FULL
PRODUCT?
• I think i’ve learnt how the function’s of Photoshop. I think i’ve also achieved a better
understanding on how different styles work together and what looks good. Although I
already had a background understanding
• I’ve learnt how to use Prezi, Scribd & Animoto. This are, free, online software that allows
the public to present their work in a different, unique format. This helps the me with my
work by allowing me to explore different styles and achieve a better understanding of
templates and what colour scheme’s work well together.
• To show to the rest of the class what my preliminary idea’s were, I made a PowerPoint
with my ideas in. We were the recorded and have to evaluate ourselves . This helps us by
letting us see what and where we went wrong.
