- LESLEY You’ve done or are doing a thorough literature review as a start point for your research proposal But you are not finished yet Three years on you are completing your write-up, that’s quite a gap – you need to have kept on top of your subject in the mean time – as you go along preferably Probably a good idea to set up some ways of efficiently keeping up to date – not repeating the lit review process in its fullest form What methods are you using now
- LESLEY Update tools will depend on the discipline/field you are exploring – the range of information resources you use will differ
- LESLEY Most alerting services provide a Table of Contents for a selected list of journals and/or updated search results of a predefined search. May be specific Alerting service or that provided by many of the databases you use for your literature searching Examples include: Zetoc Alert – British Library service, selection of journals likely to be widest available, in all disciplines TicTOCs harvests and aggregates TOC – includes Springer and Emerald IEEE Explore – saves your searches, sets up alerts and RSS feeds
- LESLEY Zetoc Alert offers email alerts of content pages and saved searches Databases page and A-Z list, click on name and might be required to login with OUCU Select Zetoc Alert from left hand menue Choose ‘Open University Choose ‘General Access At ‘Create New Zetoc Alert’ type in email address and name for alert Click on ‘Create’ At bottom of page two links ‘Add Journals’ or ‘Add Searches’ Add Journals – A-Z list or type in name and then click on ‘Add to list’ Add Searches – enter search terms “greek theatre” or author name “Goldhill, S”
- LESLEY Most of the previous alerting services also provide RSS feeds as will But specific examples include Google Reader - lets you subscribe to your favorite websites so new content comes to you when it's posted. Bloglines - is the fastest way to find and track your favorite websites and blogs in real-time. Netvibes – functions as a Start Page and is the fastest way to track real-time Web. Social media tools Includes Social networking services Draws together a variety of tools and provides space for a number of groups to interact This has or will be covered in other sessions so I wont go into it in detail except refer to some examples FriendFeed – aggregator of other social media tools, shares features with Facebook ResearchGate – aimed at scientists and other researchers with a range of functionality including a search engine that browses academic databases
- LESLEY Social bookmarking Allows users to store and share links to resources of common interest by the use of tags Diigo – bookmarks sites also allows users to highlight content from marked pages Social citation sharing Reference management systems allowing sharing of useful reading with other researchers Mendely – reference manager and academic social network which integrates with Word and other applications like CitULike Website tracking TrackEngine will email you the page with the updates highlighted so that you can read them at leisure later .
