Domestic equity benchmarks may have given investors negative return in
calendar 2015, but the smallcap segment delivered many multibaggers.As
many as 62 smallcaps doubled investor wealth, with some like Intrasoft
Technologies growing as much as 605% during the year. The S&P BSE
Smallcap Index rose nearly 2% in the year compared with the 7% fall in the
S&P BSE Sensex.
Besides Intrasoft Technologies, other big multibaggers from the smallcap
basket include Kelton Tech Solutions (up 394%), Rajesh Exports (379%), JMT
Auto (365%) and Gayatri Projects (344%).
Some analysts attributed the trend to strong flow of retail money into the
smallcap and midcap names, as largecaps bled in the face of outflow of
foreign portfolio investors' money .

“Clearly, the market reaction is dominated by retrenchment of FII flow, which
has been impacting the benchmark indices. At the same time, continued
flow of retail investor money has supported midcap and smallcap stocks,“
said Dhananjay Sinha, head of institutional research at Emkay Global
Financial Services.
Data analysed at the end of trade on December 15 showed of these 62
names, five gained more than 300% and 17 rose over 200%. Some popular
names making into the list of big performers include SpiceJet (293%),
Welspun Syntex (268%), Tata Elxsi (265%), Jubilant Life Sciences (253%),
Dishman Pharma (143%), Welspun India (143%) and Titagarh Wagons
(136%). However, that doesn't mean al smallcap stocks outperformed There
were more underperformers in the BSE smallcap index tha comprises over
700 stocks.

“Past trend indicates that often the
valuation cycle of midcap and smallcap
stocks lag the benchmark indices. Hence,
there is a fair amount of risk in the smaller
stocks if the market weakness per sists
beyond the Fed liftoff event on Dec 16,“
said Sinha of Emkay Global.
At last count, Nifty 50 was quoting a PE
value of 20.5 times compared with its peak
value of 24 times seen in March, while the
Nifty Midcap 100 index was quoting at a
PE of 26.5 times compared with 22 times
