3. What is a Pile Driving?
 It is a mechanical device used to drive the pile into
soil to provide foundation support for building or any
other structure.
 The equipment which are necessary for pile driving
are :-
1. Pile Frame
2. Pile Hammer
3. Piles
 Pile are mainly classified into two types viz;
1. Sheet Pile
2. Load-Bearing Pile

 The basic function of pile hammer is to furnishes the
energy that required to drive the piles.
 Designated by it’s type and size
 Following are the basic types of hammer viz;
1. Drop Hammer
2. Single-Acting steam Hammer
3. Double-Acting steam Hammer
4. Differential-Acting steam Hammer
5. Diesel Hammer
6. Vibratory Hammer
7. Hydraulic Hammer

5. 1. Drop Hammer
 A drop hammer is a heavy metal weight that is lifted by
rope, raised and fall on top of pile.
 Standard hammer weight= 225-1360kg
 Height of drop= 1.5-6m
 No. of blow 4-8 blows/min.

6. 2. Single-Acting Steam Hammer
 Basically, there is no difference between drop hammer
and this hammer.
 In this, steam or compressed air is used to lift the hammer
which is the drop by gravity.
 Strikes 50 or more than 50 blows/min.
 It may be open or enclosed type
 Advantages-
 Disadvantages-

7. 3. Double-Acting Steam Hammer
 The number of blow/min. is appx. twice of single acting
steam hammer
 Advantages
1. Required less time
2. Requires less distance to drop hammer
 Disadvantages
1. More complicated
2. Light wt. hammer are less suitable for driving

8. 4. Differential-Acting steam Hammer
 This Is a combination of single and double acting steam
hammer.
 These hammer requires 25-30% less steam or air than
single and double hammer.
 Open and enclosed type
 Drop distance 30-40cm
 Wt. of hammer-3150-36000kg

9. 5. Diesel Hammer
 Self-contained driving.
 It is simple & easy to move.
 In this, ram and piston are combined.
 Advantages-
1. Does not need any external source
2. Maintenance is easy, light wt. hammer
3. Required less time to install and start
4. Used in cold weather
 Disadvantages-
1. Not used n soft soil
2. No.of blows are less

10. 6. Vibratory Hammer
 Recent development
 Used in commercial pile construction
 Required electric power or hydraulic supply
 Comprises of vibratory unit and clamping device
 Movement of shaft eliminates horizontal thrust
 Less energy but more blows

11. 7. Hydraulic Hammer
 Developed by M/S. Reymond International of U.S.A. for
own use on piling contract
 Used in place of diesel , steel pile, concrete pile
 Hydraulic fluid is used
 Features –
1. Suitable for driving were limited area
2. Low initial & maintenance cost
3. Simple in design, have high blow.
