14. Vantagens: SL como plataforma de discussão
Criação mais fácil e mais coesa da comunidade de
aprendizagem (em relação aos LMS)
One of the main things is that Second Life really allowed us to
create a sense of class community — something that develops
fairly naturally in a facetoface class. So students appeared at
class and had that chance to meet each other, something that
rarely, if ever, happens in distance education classes [using]
previous technologies. And that helped keep students engaged in
the class.

15. Vantagens: SL como plataforma de discussão
Caso do aluno muito interventivo e do aluno pouco
interventivo desaparece no SL (em relação à aula presencial)
But as we progressed in the class, it became clear that running the class in a text
based environment has a whole lot of advantages over the facetoface
environment that I just hadn't anticipated.
(...)
So for me the idea that I would actually end up almost preferring to run a class in a
textbased environment to a voicebased environment, that was a huge surprise.

16. Vantagens: SL como ambiente
controlado de aprendizagem
Roleplay (University of Kansas Medical Center )
For example, doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals often interact with
patients, and students in these professions need practice applying patient
encounter strategies. Roleplaying is a common learning activity for this.
To demonstrate how Second Life can be used for role playing, we’ve created our
own Second Life medical clinic. Although this demonstration could be used in a
number of ways, such as to illustrate effective strategies, we will be presenting it as
a roleplay scenario, where each student takes the part of the doctor, nurse,
patient, or patient spouse. With this approach, students can see patient
encounters from different perspectives, which would be difficult or impossible to
do in real life. After the role play, students would discuss and reflect on their
experience and its application to future patient encounters.

18. Vantagens: SL como ambiente
controlado de aprendizagem
Roleplay (Harvard Law School):
We came up with the idea of having a quot;trialquot; in which the [Harvard Law School]
students could practice their lawyering skills and actually go through the whole
experience of a trial, and we were able to recruit people from our atlarge
participant group to participate as jurors in the trial. So they sat and listened to all
the arguments and deliberated, and returned a verdict.
This was a pretty good use of Second Life because it was a great way for us to
bring together a group of volunteers. it would have been extremely difficult to
recruit and get them together at the Law School for a real mock trial. And also
because for Law School students, who are trying to learn how to actually raise the
appropriate objection at the appropriate time in a trial, in a reallife mock trial,
often those moments go by too fast, and it's just extremely difficult to practice it.

19. Vantagens: Second Life
Abertura à comunidade exterior: maior
facilidade em trazer experts à “sala de aula”.
