Csp case study delivering sport makers to an nhs workforce
1. CSP Case Study
Delivering Sport Makers to an NHS
Workforce
Pro-Active North London (P-ANL) worked with
the NHS to deliver two Sport Maker events at
local hospitals. The events attracted 44 Sport
Makers who have gone on to set up sport
sessions and a Community Games event. Read
on to find out how they did it…

Workforce
• P-ANL was contacted by the coordinator of an NHS wellness programme
(Move for Life), which aims to create ‘sporting champions’ who encourage
others to take part in sport. As the aims of this programme are similar to
Sport Makers, they decided to run events for staff.
• The NHS contact booked rooms, liaised with staff to find suitable dates and
asked them to sign up online.
• Although P-ANL created a tailored poster (which highlighted the low sport
participation levels in the borough) to promote the event, the NHS contact
took on all responsibility for marketing the events to staff.
• Two events were held across two hospitals.

Workforce
• Tie the event to an existing workplace initiative – this
meant that the NHS could easily see what the benefits of
Sport Makers would be to them.
• Use NHS contact to promote the event – her knowledge of
promoting events like this within the NHS meant that the CSP
used less resource in this area.
• Use paper registrations on the day – some members of
staff live in neighbouring CSP areas so weren’t able to find
the event online.

• Keep NHS contact updated on numbers booked on to events –
this helped her keep track of how many more people she needed to
register for the event.
• Be realistic about number of events held - the CSP originally
wanted to run two events in order to fit in with shift patterns.
However, there were not enough numbers to cover two events, so
they reverted to one event at each hospital.
• Run a shorter version of the event – the CSP adapted their event
so that it lasted 90 minutes. Staff were able to take extended lunch
breaks or reschedule their time to attend.

• Provide lunch – for some, missing out on lunch would be a barrier to
attendance.
• Make the event interactive – the CSP delivered the event in a quiz style
and set up Ping! table tennis sets for staff to use.
• Pick a ‘Sporting Champion’ from each event – they were able to
communicate with Sport Makers and the CSP to ensure that Sport Makers
were connected to relevant deployment opportunities
• Link Sport Makers to existing events – the CSP’s Community Games
Officer and the NHS contact helped the Sport Makers to deliver a
successful Community Games event.

• 44 Sport Makers attended in total.
• Sport Makers have set up popular sport and fitness sessions
for colleagues at the hospitals and hosted a successful
daytime, multi-sports Community Games event.
