Show, Don’t Tell
5
—Your cover letter and resume should scream “I’m the perfect fit!”
—Customize your resume and cover letter for the position.
—Your listed job responsibilities should represent the job description’s listed
responsibilities.
—Your word choice should match theirs. Look at the buzzwords they use in their
description and on their website (especially the words they use for their core values).

—Look at more than just their website, what they do,
where they’re located, etc.

awards, recent publications they’ve been published
in, their core values, charities they support, their
current pain points.

Keep Materials Up-To-Date: Your Cover Letter
10
—And, oh yeah, HAVE a cover letter. About 1/3 candidates don’t send in a cover letter with
their resume and application.
—Your cover letter, like your resume, should reflect buzzwords that resonate with the
hiring manager.
—While your resume should answer the question “why me?” the cover letter should
answer the question “why them?”

everywhere are using it.
—Show off your accomplishments, samples of your work, and share job or industry
news on your profile.
—Do you need to clean up your social media?
—Some hiring managers don’t care what you do during your free time, but some do.

Pre-Interview Project
12
– How to Get Any Job You Want (even if you’re
unqualified) by Raghav Haran.
– Companies want to hire people who will be able to
solve their problems. Sometimes that means
looking for the right experience/credentials, but
9/10 it means they just want to see that you can
help them resolve their pain points/challenges.
– Common pain pts: work overload, need to reduce
cost/save money, need to streamline their
processes for efficiency.
– Do the job before you get the job.

Follow Up!
13
– Anvil Media recruiter, Mike Terry, advises “Follow
up. No matter if you’re applying to an entry-level
job or a senior-level job, follow up. Not a lot of
people do.”
– It’s not going to bother them to follow up once a
week, to show passion for the position and keep
you on their minds.

some employers are partial to hand-
written notes.
