Liberia has struggled with a 14-year civil war that killed over 200,000 people and left half the population without access to healthcare, safe water, or sanitation. In 2005, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa's first female president and has worked to rebuild the country and create more equality for women, including appointing women to government positions and rebuilding markets. However, Liberian women still face many challenges from the effects of the war and lack of education and face high rates of poverty, sexual violence, and HIV/AIDS.
