Crimp Height
The purpose of inspecting the crimp height is to ensure that no major errors have been made in the
setup of the machine. As a general rule for tails, including any stiffener in the crimp area with a
thickness of 0.125mm - 0.35mm (0.005” - 0.014”), the height of the crimp should be between
0.7mm - 0.9mm (0.028” - 0.035”)
Whilst the height does vary by machine and by setup, it is scaleable. The following table shows
a more specific correlation for the height of the crimp in relation to the thickness of the tail:
The crimp height should never be used as the only criteria for rejecting the crimp but purely for
identifying it for further investigation. If the crimp is tight and not cracking the conductor, then it
would be considered as acceptable.
Likewise the crimp height should not be considered the sole criteria for accepting the crimp. The part
should always be checked for cracked conductors and for any gap between the contact facing the tail.
A crimp that is too high will normally show a gap between the face/barrel of the contact and the tail.
Conversely a crimp that is too low will show signs of cracking or marking the conductor.
