  1. Throughout our history GNLD has been about empowering people to take control of their lives… Their health… Their personal development… Their financial future and security… When it comes to taking control of health the need has never been greater than it is today… The reality is that we are not winning the war against disease…we are losing it! Much of the reason for this is bad diets based on bad food!
  2. We are in a state of a global health crisis! Chronic diseases are getting out of control. 35 million people are impacted globally and at the current rate – they are going to impact 41 million people by 2015. In fact the incidence of chronic diseases is growing faster than the population itself… The problem has become so large and foreboding that the WHO published a special report on chronic diseases impacting the world populations. In that report they sound a strong alarm….pointing out that the problem is huge…and we NEED to do something about it or we are in big trouble…
  3. So, what is chronic disease? According to the World Health Organization these are diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes and they are assuming epidemic proportions. The top-5 chronic diseases driving this crisis are heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory disease, and diabetes. The magnitude and scale are so great that health authorities world wide have begun sounding the alarm.

Now…just to make sure you don’ t think this applies to some other people in some other country, take a look at what the WHO says about the situation in the United States… In 2002 Chronic Disease accounted for 88% of all deaths… Essentially 9 out of 10 people here today will die from Chronic Disease!!! (Point out some elements of chart as you see appropriate)
  5. And for the Canadians in the audience…the situation is no better…in fact the WHO data says it’s slightly worse… In 2002 89% of all deaths in Canada we attributed to Chronic Disease… Again 9 out of 10 of you…!
  6. The magnitude and scale are so great that the World Health Organization and other preeminent health authorities around the globe have started sounding the alarm Let’s look at some of these more closely…
  7. The world health organization tells us that cardiovascular diseases accounted for nearly 1/3 rd of all deaths. Heart disease is the #1 killer of both men and women alike impacting about 17 million people. The #1 contributor to this problem is poor diet….
  8. Let’s look at Cancer. It’s a similar, alarming story. 20 million people suffered from cancer in 2005 and in 20 years – by 2025, that is going to grow to 30 million people – a 50% increase!!!
  9. Diabetes is another one. Of all the chronic diseases Diabetes is growing the fastest and going to be the biggest problem. In fact, today Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions… 171 million people already have the disease….and perhaps twice as many more have a condition doctors and scientists are calling “pre-diabetes”. One person will die from the disease every 5 seconds!!! These numbers are expected to double by 2030….340 million people with fully diagnosed Diabetes…and perhaps twice as many with pre-Diabetes…that’s 1 billion people somehow caught up in the Diabetes epidemic!
  10. This is alarming. We are losing this battle and we need to take action.
  11. Let’s take a look at why that is happening. The #1 reason is poor diets. What that means is that we are not getting enough of protective nutrients in our diet. There is no shortage of calories; but the key nutrients that promote health and protect us against these chronic diseases are missing. On top of that – we are not as physically active as we need to be. We are spending our time in cars and in our offices and not getting much exercise – perhaps due to our busy lifestyles and juggling multiple priorities. Fast food seems much more convenient than looking for healthier alternatives. The problem as well as the solution to this are both in the food we eat. Let’s take a look…
  12. We all know what we’re supposed to eat… We’ve been being told that for decades… In the 1990’s we were told to follow the USDA’s Healthy Food pyramid… (Speak briefly about the whole grains and Fruit & Vegetable layers as critical for a foundation for optimal health.

Most recently the healthy food pyramid was further refined by the Harvard School of Medicine This new pyramid includes a more realistic look at food and adds an the important foundation elements of regular exercise and weight control… Also, for the first time the importance of plant sourced oils; where the lipids and sterols are found was highlighted… Something GNLD has been talking about for nearly 50 years!
  14. This is the GNLD Wellness Pyramid, based on the USDA’s healthy food guide pyramid, later refined by the Harvard School of Medicine. Your healthy pyramid should be built on a healthy foundation of a physical activity and weight management. Foods containing simple and processed fats and sugars should be limited… But here’s the reality of our diet…
  15. Too much of the wrong stuff ---- not enough of the right stuff …. Most of us have turned the healthy food pyramid upside down. 95% of us don’t eat the kinds of foods that support good health. Instead of making whole grains the base of our diet, most of us eat less than one serving a day. Instead of eating lots of fruits and vegetables, we eat lots of sweets and unhealthy fats, and instead of choosing heart healthy fish, we are choosing burgers and pizza. Many people don’t eat fish due to concerns about presence of heavy metals and contaminants. So – what can you do?....
  16. So what can you do? – to go from the typical lifestyle pyramid to the Wellness Pyramid? The need for taking charge of our own health has never been greater, and population surveys tell us that more and more people are wanting to do this today unlike ever before. In fact the Generation ‘Y’ – people who are about 19-31 years old today are the most health conscious ever. They don’t want to get the illnesses that they saw parents or grandparents struggle with. They realize that ‘prevention’ is a whole lot smarter, and coincidently these are also the people who do not trust large corporations and advertising. They want to hear from friends and people they can trust. Not only are they incredible health conscious – they are also incredibly networked, though the power of the internet today. They also care about the environment and recognize the importance of whole foods. They are the ones who will be the most open to hearing about what we have to offer… And here’s what we have now to bring to the world…
  17. The WHO recommendations to fix this are simple… Their strategy for prevention is… If you smoke…quit! If you are inactive…get active! And, most importantly…FIX YOUR DIET!!! Get rid of the excesses of refined, processed, fast and convenience foods and get back to giving your body the whole food nutrition it needs in order to thrive. Leading global health authorities including World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, American Heart Association, National Cancer Institute , and American Diabetes Association agree that the key to preventing disease and promoting health is physical activity and eating a nutrient rich diet that includes whole grains, fruits & vegetables and fish. I think we all understand that too. It is pretty intuitive. Of course eating a healthy, balanced diet will promote health, but it’s not always easy to do given our hectic lives today.

Again the US CDC agrees…pointing out that diets rich in fruits and vegetables reduce the likelihood of cancer occurring. Further support for dietary change comes form the US National Cancer Institute. They recommend people eat more fruits, vegetables and grains because they contain a number of phyto-nutrients that reduce cancer risk … Specifically drawing attention to the numerous studies that have proven that carotenoids prevent some cancers. A powerful and important message! Now let’s look at Diabetes…
