17. Surface conditions
Cleaning properties are determined by wettability
Hydrophilic Hydrophobic Super-hydrophobic
contact angle << 90° contact angle ~90° contact angle >> 90°
“self cleaning” IF rinsing speed
self-cleaning
is high
“easy-to-clean” “no wetting”

18. Surface conditions
Hydrophilic “self-cleaning” surfaces
• Self-cleaning mechanism
• Dirt particles are washed away by water wetting the surface
• Requires high rinsing speed to work well
– Typically installation angle of surface >70° (gravity drives water!)
– Large amount of water
• Well suited for environments with amply rain for badly
accessible installation locations
• Photo-catalytic effect
• TiO2 particles in surface dissociate water molecules into super
oxide and hydroxyl radicals, which decompose organic
residues on the surface e g bacteria lichen fungal attack
surface, e.g. bacteria, lichen,
• No effect to inorganic dirt, e.g. sand, dust, lime-scale
19. MIRO-Sun Easy to clean surface
Hydrophobic “easy-to-clean” surfaces
• Decreased sticking of dirt on surface
dirt is easily removed when rinsed with water
• Rinsing cycle requires less water
water droplet on l f
t d l t leaf
• Easy drying due to decreased wettability of water
without wiping trace
• Can easily be dried by air blower
without water residues on surface
• Easy de-icing water droplet on MIRO-sun
• Metal surface no static loads if grounded
20. Why do we need CSP ?
The way of thinking of our modern civilization is based on a
fatal mistake:
We do not see the fundamental difference in
between energy sources and energy stores!
Our global energy consumption is based mainly on
ENERGY STORES like fossil fuels and uranium with no
sustainability and fatal consequences for future generations
(climate change nulear waste)
change,
Our choices for the use of ENERGY SOURCES:
(Electricity production per square kilometer of land use per year) Source: DLR
Bio Mass Power Plants 1-2 GWh/km²/a (Central Europe)
Geo Thermal Power Plants 1-2 GWh/km²/a (Turkey, Italy, France)
Wind Parks 5-50 GWh/km²/a (Coast and Offshore)
Hydro Power 5-50 GWh/km²/a (Norway, Alps)
Photovoltaics
