4. Ch:3 – Introduction
God created us because of love.
He desired to share his love and goodness with us.
He gave us Free Will so that we can choose to:
know Him
love Him
serve Him
live with him forever in Heaven after our life on earth ends.
we are free to choose to love God
we are also free to reject him.
When we reject God we turn to evil.
We will examine the existence of evil in the world.
5. Satan’s Fall
Bad angels are called demons or “fallen angels” b/c they turned against God.
Satan is a fallen angel who along with the other fallen angels rejected God &
his friendship and were therefore cast from heaven. (Paragraph 1, pg. 27)
Christ spoke about the devil in the New Testament calling him among other
things the “father of lies.”
The purpose of Christ’s Redemption is the defeat of sin and death and to
defeat Satan. (Paragraph 4, pg. 27)
6. Satan’s Fall
God always gives us grace to resist temptation
God is forever ready to help us and strengthen us in our weakness.
Read the scripture passage(1 Cor: 10-13 at the bottom of page 27) (Watch the Video – What is sin?)
Satan’s power is greater than ours but nothing compared to God’s.
This is why our Christian faith is VERY IMPORTANT!
7. The Fall of Adam and Eve
The Promise after the Fall
God created our first parents and blessed them
Go made gave them free will so they could
choose to return his love.
Example – A person w/o free will is a slave (Slaves
can’t love the master b/c they aren’t free)
Adam and Eve chose to use their freedom to sin
and lost communion and friendship with God
This event is called the Fall
Watch the video on Fr. Robert Barron on Original Sin~
Excellent summation of the Christian understanding of original sin.
8. Man’s Fall
The Original Sin
Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden in
Harmony with God and each other and creation.
This state was called original holiness and Original
Justice.
Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s prohibition not to
eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
and if they did they would suffer death.
They were tempted by the Serpent and choose to
disobey God’s command committing the sin of
disobedience.
9. Consequences of Original Sin
Consequences of Original Sin for Adam and Eve
They lost original holiness and original justice.
Destroyed the good relationship between God
and human beings
Sin caused sickness and suffering and brought
death into the world.
Meaning they didn’t live
( page 30 of the text).
10. Consequences
Consequences of Original Sin for All Humanity
Adam and Eve’s Original Sin didn’t just affect them but the whole human
race.
Original sin means that from the moment of conception each human
person receives Adam and Eve’s fallen nature.
Sanctifying grace is restored through Baptism but a person is still
subject to concupiscence - is the inner disorder of our basic drives,
suffering and eventually death.
We see the consequences of original sin in the children of
Adam and Eve who had two sons, Cain and Abel.
Cain kills Abel out of envy and hatred.
Sin divides us from God and each other
11. Sin and Redemption
God allows evil as a consequence of our free will.
God also can bring about good from evil. This is the mystery of the
Redemption.
God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to save humanity from sin through
Passion
Death
Resurrection
Christ came to redeem everyone.
He is a New Adam who is obedience and atones for the disobediences
of the original Adam.
His death makes it possible for us to be restored to the divine life.
Original sin and the mystery of redemption are inseparable. The
Redemption is God’s remedy for the Fall of man.
12. Conclusion
God created us in a state of holiness, justice, and happiness
Our first parents rejected God and causing us to loose these
original gifts.
The consequences of Original Sin affect all humanity and
incline us toward sin.
This inclination is called concupiscence.
God mercifully promised a Redeemer to restore us to
friendship with God
That promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
