Mastering Vendor Selection and Partnership Management
PPMA 2016 - Juice at the university of sheffield Case Study
1. Juice at The University
of Sheffield
Case Study - April 2016
Developed by Gary Butterfield on behalf of Everyday Juice Limited and The University of Sheffield.
2. There has never been a more critical time for the UK economy to put employee health and wellbeing
as an essential element to organisation life and a central concern for all business leaders.
As the pace of change continues to accelerate, organisations are faced with the challenge of
defending their position in such a competitive and volitive marketplace. To maintain their position,
organisations need to be innovative, adaptable and create remarkable places to work, which attracts,
grows and engages talented people. These talented people need to be healthy, well and happy, and
has left many forward thinking employers viewing health and wellbeing as business critical.
The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield is a member of the prestigious Russell Group of leading UK universities.
Founded in 1905 from public donations, the University has maintained its close links to the local
community, whilst becoming an established, internationally recognised centre for research, attracting
students and members of staff from all over the world.
Today, the University has an annual income of around £610 million. Its fifty departments are grouped
into five academic faculties, with more than 26,000 students and a staff of 8,000, including 1,600
academics. In 2011, The University of Sheffield was voted Times Higher Education’s University of the
Year, being praised for its research, flair and clear values. The University was also voted Number 1 for
Student Experience, The Times Higher Student Experience Survey 2014-2015.
What is Juice?
Juice is a fresh approach to engaging University employees in their personal health and wellbeing. It
makes it easy for them to discover and access a wide variety of healthy activities across campus and
find regularly updated information. Juice has been designed to inspire and motivate staff to find their
own path to better health and wellbeing.
Juice brings the University’s health and wellbeing offer together into one place under a strongly
branded identity, making it simple to manage and enhance the offer, and provides clear evidence of
impact.
Juice has been developed by University subsidiary company Everyday Juice Limited (EJL), occupational
health and wellbeing specialists who have combined years of experience in HR, health and fitness and
digital engagement. We believe that the strongest and most sustainable approach is to start with the
needs of the individual. Juice is a programme designed to inspire each employee to take responsibility
for his or her own health, wellbeing and happiness, and provides advice, support and activities that
encourage each member of staff to make healthy changes to their lifestyle. It motivates people to try
something new and achieve things that they thought they could not.
3. Juice at The University of Sheffield
Juice launched at the University in November 2012 following two successful pilot projects. The aim
was to engage and inspire employees to start their own journey to better health and wellbeing. Staff,
students and alumni shape and deliver Juice’s content. Since its launch, Juice has become a valued
part of University life. Levels of awareness and engagement are high and feedback shows it’s having a
big impact on health and wellbeing.
Working with a network of highly qualified occupational health specialists, Juice offers staff a
comprehensive range of clinical and non-clinical services along with activity provision taking place
around campus.
An integral part of the Juice offer is its vibrant, fresh and fun Platform, specifically designed to
promote staff engagement through a one-stop-shop approach. The Platform:
• Has a purpose built content management system where articles, news stories and activities
can be published at any time. This system can also be accessed to gather up-to-date analytics
for web usage, attendance, and feedback, which can be accessed at any time by the
University. The Platform is also linked to Google Analytics, meaning that the University has
information regarding past visits and also real-time data.
• Houses the Health Hub, an online depository for articles covering health and wellbeing in its
broadest sense (physical, social, mindset and economic). This service is led by EJL, and written
by industry leaders in occupational health and wellbeing. Working in partnership with the
University, HR colleagues can remove and/or contribute to the articles at any time.
• Juice runs quarterly online campaigns covering the aforementioned genres of health and
wellbeing for maximum engagement, and benefits staff with seasonal content.
• Juice has an integrated activity booking system linked to a member of staff’s existing
University email account. The Platform provides activity participants with all key information
for an informed decision; this includes location, group leader, accessibility, parking and
bicycle provision.
• Automatically contacts staff to confirm bookings and provide pre-activity reminders.
• Promotes user feedback following completion of an activity, giving the option to give a star
rating and text reviews.
• Has its own News feed that is populated by both EJL and the University, relating to campaigns,
activities, articles and other events.
• Is integrated with all major social media platforms to promote staff engagement.
• Has an ”About” section specific to the University. This section features key internal contacts
for colleague enquiries whilst also containing information relevant to University structure,
strategy and related policies and practices.
The Juice Platform has been purposely designed to require minimal resource from the University. EJL
leads on article, campaign, and news provision on the University’s behalf, leaving only a fractional
Assistant level colleague (approx. 20% FTE) to service the Platform.
4. Juice has always had a bias for action. Not only is it a place where staff can learn the benefits of better
health and wellbeing, but also a place where colleagues can put their new knowledge to action
through our broad range of activity provision. Juice offers a suite of different activities to staff at the
University, ranging from Bootcamp, Tai Chi and Body Health Check sessions to nutrition seminars and
Mindfulness courses, plus all else in-between.
Juice also has its own informal steering group, appropriately named the “Juicevocates” who are
instrumental in guiding the scheme in line with staff need. We consider the Juice programme to be a
powerful mechanism to augment staff health, wellbeing and engagement, and work closely with staff
to make sure that both the programme and Platform are structured to match the needs of the
organisation and the individuals who work there.
Has it worked?
Juice is contributing to the University’s business by making employees happier, healthier and more
engaged. Participants can rate their experiences and post online via the Juice Platform or on social
media. So far, every Juice activity has averaged the highest possible 5* rating from users, and activity
feedback has included:
• “It’s absolutely changed my life for the better… I am so grateful for everything Juice has done.”
• “I feel energised when I come back to work and face the afternoon feeling refreshed.”
• “This has had such a positive impact on my overall wellbeing. Over the past two or three years, I
have felt quite isolated and depressed, but attending Bootcamp has made me feel that I do belong
at the University.”
Findings from the 2016 Staff Survey show a significant improvement to staff moral and enthusiasm.
Of the 74% of staff (approximately 5,600) who completed the survey, 81% were aware of Juice, and
over 3,500 staff had taken part in at least one Juice activity. These figures continue to grow each
month. The survey also showed:
• 92% believed they were treated with fairness and respect (an increase of 2%)
• 71% felt valued by the University (an increase of 6% and 17% above the Higher Education
average)
• 94% were proud to work for the University (the highest in Higher Education, and 8% above
average)
• 89% would recommend the University as an excellent place to work (an increase of 2%)
• 87% considered that the University had a genuine interest in their health and wellbeing (an
increase of 7%)
• 82% felt they had the opportunity for personal development and growth (an increase of 7%)
Whilst staff engagement is Juice’s main driver, sickness and absence figures are also being monitored.
In areas where Juice has focused its activities the University has seen a fall in the number of working
days lost per person.
5. Juice is breaking new ground and gaining external recognition. Already it’s been:
• Winner of the Health and Wellbeing Special Award 2016 at the Sunday Times Top 100 Places
to Work. The University was also placed 32nd
best place to work on their first attempt, is the
only higher education institution on the list for 6 years, and has a significantly larger staff
population than any other employer on the list
• Winner of the Occupational Health and Wellbeing Award 2016 at the National HR Distinction
Awards
• Winner in the inaugural Employee Engagement Awards 2015 Wellness category.
• Awarded the winner of the High Performance HR category of the 2014 University HR (UHR)
Awards.
• Winner in the Health and Wellbeing category of the national HR Excellence Awards 2014.
• Finalist in the Best Health and Wellbeing Benefits (large employer) category of the 2014
Employee Benefits Awards.
• Finalist in the Personnel Today 2014 Awards for Best Wellbeing Programme.
Upon launching the new Platform at the University, staff response has been remarkably positive. On
the 5th
January 2016 we launched the Platform to over 8,000 staff, and saw over 700 users create
accounts and in excess of 1,800 activity bookings taken within its first two hours. The number of Juice
users continues to grow on a daily basis.
