FOR I,II,III CLASSES
• Draw a line and write the numbers at equal
intervals starting from 1 to any number, the
paper would accommodate. This is called
number line or NUMBER RAY.

TO MAKE THE STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THE GREATER AND SMALLER
USE THE NUMBER LINE
• Which is smaller 4 or 25?
Show by an arrow the position of 25 and 4 on the number line.
If a number is on the left side of any number, it is smaller to that
number. 4 is on the left of 25 and so it is smaller to 25.
Give more examples.
Which is smaller 20 or 1? As 1 lies to the left of 20, it is smaller to 20.

ADDITION ON NUMBER LINE
• 2 + 3 =

Use the number line and draw a curve from the beginning to the number
given in the addition first. Then draw another curve from the first curve
as far as the number given.
In the above example, from the start to 2 a curve is drawn. Then from
2, counting 3 digits another curve is drawn. Where the curve ends is the
sum of 2 + 3= 5
SEE ANOTHER EXAMPLE
• 7 + 8=

First draw a curve from the start to number 7, then draw another curve 8
digits away. The curve touches 15 and so the sum is 15
7 + 8= 15

THE SUM
• 8 + 3=
• 3 + 7=
• 5 + 8=
• 4 + 6=

Number line for subtraction
• Find the difference between 8 and 3
8 - 3 =
Draw a curve to the first given number from
the starting of the line and draw another
curve backwards to the number given next.

Subtract these on number line
• 20 - 5=
• 12 - 4 =
• 15 - 6=
• 9 – 5 =

MULTIPLICATION
• We know multiplication is a repeated addition.
So, let us use the number line for multiplication
as we did addition on it.
• For instance:
3 X 5 =
Repeat 3 on the number line 5 times, we get 15
as the product of this multiplication.
