Comparing The Statue Of Apollo Belvede
After looking at the vast antique collection found in the Sir John Soanes's Museum, London, I was
able to identify with 2 objects that I felt had the most interest to me. Found in the Colonnade and
Dome room, I will compare and contrast the statue of Apollo Belvedere, a Greek god originally
made from bronze and discovered in Rome in the late 15th century. The second is a statue of the
Ephesian Diana, an Egyptian sculpture derived of marble. There are a number of statues replicating
the pagan goddess, Artemis from Ephesus and can be found dating back to the first and second
centuries AD. The one depicted above from the Soane museum dates back to 2nd century AD, and
the head turreted crown indicates this.
The Ephesian Diana is said to be...show more content...
Apollo is a classical sculpture, of the renaissance period. Being naturalistic it exhibits all areas of
the body: muscular arms, legs torso, and pubic region. Many copies of Apollo are completely nude,
however Saone's version does show Apollo with a coy fig leaf covering his genitals.
Male Greek figures of this time tended to be represented nude, this however, was uncommon
during periods of ancient Egyptian art, as only people of low status would appear naked and female
nudity didn't appear to a lot later. Diana you will notice is clothed.
Classical art is generally associated with white marble however as with 70% of the antiques
within the gallery, Soane's version of Apollo is a cast replica. The Ephesian Diana herself is made
entirely from pentallic marble, you will notice some, such as the statue in Saone's gallery to have
dark hands, face and feet which are made from black marble. Dark colours were very common to
Egyptian sculpture to signify royalty.
Most sculptures made within the classical period were to show appreciation for the gods. One
way to achieve this was by size and quality. Apollo stands tall with a strong sense of prominence.
Height was ideal as many sculptures were displayed in temple spaces or places where sculptures
could be worshipped or idealized. Each and every muscle in Apollo is clearly defined,

Compare And Contrast The Health Care System
Is it possible for two countries which are thousands of kilometers away from each other to have
some similarities in their health care system? Health care system is one of the most important and
fundamental sectors in any country or region all around the world. Many countries pour a major
amount of their overall income to support the health care system. And the main reason behind this
tremendous effort provided by the countries all around the world for the health care system is that
each country wants to provide a good and high standard health care services for all the population

One of the biggest issues in the medical field sector in United Arab Emirates is the lack of work
forces such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists (Gov of the UAE). According to Ministry of
health statistics, the number of doctors in United Arab Emirates is 1.75 per 1000 people which
is a very low ratio. While the nurses represent 2.7 per 1000 people ( MOH of the UAE,2014 ) .
The country had realized the huge gap that impaire the health care system. Thus , the priority was
set on its agenda for the plan of the year 2030. where it focuses on the issue and state the
following " The Authority is also working on a comprehensive plan to attract, train and retain
health care professionals with the focus on increasing the number of Emirati work force"

finance . The government is only responsible for the basic health care services. Therefore each
individual is expected to take responsibility for his/her own health requirements (Lee & Wong ,2008
).This issue has the major impact on the health care system of Singapore .However an outstanding
country as Singapore would not stay still while such a problem exists in its system

Compare And Contrast Two Friends
We all have friends that are alike or different from each other. My friend Nicole and Amy are also
friends. Both of them are alike in some ways, but at the same time unlike from each other. For
example, they both dress to their comfort, but the clothes they choose to wear are different. They
both have similar taste in music and television shows. However, Nicole and Amy are more
different than alike. Nicole and Amy have different appearance and style. Nicole is five feet and
two inches with medium brown wavy hair that is shoulder length. She has big eyes and also
freckles on her face. Nicole tends to dress very casually. For an instant, she would wear jean with a

really sociable and blunt at the same time. I remember a time during lunch there was a table across
from us were talking super loud and she shout "shut up". Amy is not afraid to speak her mind while
Nicole is more shy and quiet. Nicole cannot stand watching gory, horror and supernatural movie. For
example, during summer, our friend, Julie, invited Nicole, Amy, and Iwatch Green Inferno. Nicole
did not want to come along due to the fact that when she watched the trailer of that movie she
found it super gory and disgusting. However, Amy did not find that trailer gory and disgusting and
came long to watch the movie with us. Amy enjoys watching horror or supernatural movie or
shows. For example, during the month of October, there was a movie call Crimson Peak and Amy

Compare And Contrast Essay Psychology
Amanda is struggling with her relationship with her parents which is typical for adolescents. She
wants to express herself through her clothing and her parents are trying to pressure her into dressing
more feminine or more typical. They pick on her habits, such as burping, which are not seen as very
lady–like. Amanda's parents are also not very accepting of her sexuality. Whenever they seem to
bring up the topic in conversation, both Amanda and her parents begin to argue. Her parents do not
understand her, while her friends do. She feels unaccepted by her parents, which strengths her
relationship with her peers and weakens the relationship with her parents.
Mandy is a young girl experiencing romance for the first time in her life. She is very excited about
the idea of boys liking her since she believes she was unattractive at a young age. This stage is
important because Mandy is beginning to explore her sexuality and making connections
/relationships with others. She has developed an obvious attachment to a few boys. She believes that
she understands the real meaning of love opposite to her parents. This idea supports egocentrism in
adolescence in which teenagers believe that their parents do not understand the emotions and the
experiences they are having....show more content...
Amanda's problems stem from her parents' inability to accept her sexuality and Mandy's from her
parents' discovery of her sexual activity. Both of these issues cause tensions of the child–parent
relationship. In adolescence, teens tend to spend more time with their peers and can find support and
loyalty from friends. This quality and the strains on child–parent relationships accounts for the
decreased amount of time spent with parents and increased amount of time spent with friends in

A Comparison of Two Schools of Psychology
There are many different schools of psychology, each have their own views and they all look at
psychology from different perspectives. I am going to outline six perspectives and then compare and
contrast two schools.
The biological perspective and major figures such as Karl Lashley looks to the body to explain the
mind, they look at hormones, genes, the brain, and the central nervous system to explain the way we
think, feel and act. The psychodynamic perspective and major figures such as Sigmund Freud views
behaviour as driven by powerful mental conflicts locked deep within the subconscious. The
behaviourist perspective and major figures such as John...show more content...
In order to enable me to compare and contrast the psychodynamic approach and the behaviourist
approach they must be discussed in more depth. Behaviourism is a movement in psychology that
advocates the use of strict experimental procedures to study observable behaviour or responses in
relation to the environment. B.F Skinner was a behavioural psychologist who became famous for
his work with rats using his "Skinner box". He took the extreme liberty of transferring his
experience and theories of rats directly to humans. It should be kept in mind that rats and people are
tremendously different creatures, yet Skinner had no problem with easily assuming what was true
for rats, on a very simple scale, would be applicable to humans in very different and complex
situations. Classical and operant conditioning played a large part in Skinners research (Glassman,
2000).
In a traditional behavioural approach, Skinner followed in the footsteps of Pavlov and Watson. This
view puts across that the subject matter of human psychology is only the behaviour of the human
being. Behaviourism claims that consciousness is neither a definite nor a usable concept. The
behaviourist holds the belief in the existence of consciousness; it goes back to the ancient days of
superstition and magic. The behaviourists asks: why don't we make what we can (Nye, 2000).

You could choose two places that have different settings, where you could visit for vacation or

Gambling, whether for life or money, is risky and success is not guaranteed, even if you 'win'. Two

Tessie's personality is somewhat similar to Paul's but they also have their differences. Paul is very
hopeful about winning the money his family needs, he has an incredible love for his mother. He is
also very passionate about horse–races. He has a real gift for picking a winner and it's this attitude
that leads him to make money for his mother and save their house from haunting them. Tessie is also
hopeful, hopeful that she will not 'win' the lottery. Of course, we find as we read that this doesn't
happen. Tessie does 'win' the lottery and she seems to be the only one that is saddened by this fact.
Little Paul is a very hopeful, fortunate boy. He so vividly pictures the horse races to come while
riding his rocking–horse, it's as if he's in the race himself and the rocking–horse is the winning
horse. In "The Rocking–Horse Winner", Lawrence really paints a imaginative picture with
descriptions such as with Paul's "big blue eyes that had an uncanny cold fire in them", and in
"The Lottery" Jackson paints a picture with words such as The town's children are collecting rocks
like young children regularly do. The men are "speaking of rain, planting, tractors and taxes." The
women are making small talk with one another. It seems like a regular day in a regular town." So,
in both stories the setting is different and the people are different but they have a similarity in the
fact that they are all gambling for something, whether good or bad. In reading these

Compare & Contrast Two Approaches to Psychology
Psychology is a discipline that involves monitoring mental processes and behaviour scientifically.
Psychologists try to delve into the basic functions of a person and animals cerebral activity. This
usually involves studying relationships, emotions, personality and many more areas of a person or
animals day to day life. Psychology tends to steer towards finding reasons for a person or animals
actions in an attempt to resolve them.
There are many different sub – fields of psychology, however it is possible to draw similarities and

Skinner created the theory of Operant Conditioning as he believed that all behaviour can be
controlled by rewards or reinforcement. This is very different from Pavlovs theory of Classical
Conditioning as Skinner is trying to control voluntary behaviour. This is done by giving the
subject a positive or negative reaction to an action with the theory that a negative response will
discourage the subject to repeat the action. A good example of this is house training a dog, as the
dogs natural reaction is to relieve itself, however it must be taught to wait until it is outside. The
more the dog waits until he is outside, the more praise he receives therefore it is less likely to wish
to instigate a negative reaction by relieving himself inside the house.
A huge difference between the two theories is the way they carry out their research. Behaviourism
uses animals to gain an insight into human behaviour, whereas Psychodynamic uses human subjects
to research into the inner psyche.
One of Freuds most famous experiments was 'Little Hans'. This was about a five year old boy
who was afraid of horses, and was jealous of the birth of his sister. It was thought that Hans' anxiety
culminated from his inner desire to be his mothers mate. Freud used Hans in order to help develop
another of his theories – the 'Oedipus Complex' which is a small boys inner jealousy of his father
and fear of punishment by castration by him. It must be stressed that the

'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' and 'The Red Convertible' 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek
Bridge' by Ambrose Bierce and 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Erdrich both recount sorrowful
tales of men during times of war. The stories differ in that 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' is a
story written in reverse, where the readers do not truly know the plot until the end– whereas 'The
Red Convertible' is just a man recounting the story of his long lost brother. However despite their
differences, both of the stories continue to build up hope in the reader only to find nothing but a

The entire story was just a snapshot that occurred in his mind before his death. Ambrose Bierce
purposefully continues to build the anticipation that the devout Union soldier had escaped, only to
drop the reader into a tale of demise and overall doom. 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Endrich
was written in 1984 and revolves around a Vietnam veteran and his brother. Lyman Lamartine is a
young man whose brother has just returned from the Vietnam War and has been traumatized by what
he had seen overseas.
Before the war, Lyman and his brother Henry were extremely close. Before Henry departed for the
war, and as Lyman recounts in the story, the two bonded over a red convertible. This car proves to
be symbolic, both throughout, and at the end of the story, due to the change in Henry's behavior,
illustrated by this quote from when Henry returns: "We had always been together before. But he was
such a loner now that I didn't know how to take it."
When Henry returns, he has no desire to ride in the red convertible, no desire to wear the bright
colored clothes he used to dawn–– instead Henry just liked to sit around and sob about the war. The
quote from the middle of the story, speaking about the television, and how Henry just sat "in front of

Comparing Cultures

Comparing Cultures
When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily
defined as the social behavior and normality's found in human societies. It can also be easily made
up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out
framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are
both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how
we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table,
how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." (Cristina De Rossi.)...show

In people, culture must be learned through experiences. For most countries, learned behaviors are
passed down from one generation to the next. The purpose behind this is on the grounds that
culture isn 't natural like in creatures because they are not conceived with it. People will begin to
get their way of life during childbirth and it takes numerous years to take in the way of life like
how to talk the dialect and comply with the rules that everyone must follow, that is the reason it is
said we should respect their elders.
The two countries that we are going to compare are India and China. The greatest contrast among
Indian China is the level of development in both nations. Advancement can be seeing more in India
than in China and the struck me the most. There could be many variables causing this distinction. To
begin with, let 's examine the differences in the government of meat country. Since the meaning of
time, the Chinese government is continuing to do things their way heavily influencing what happens
in the country. They have inumerous laws that directly or indirectly cause a standstill with
innovation. The majority of the things our state possessed in China bus to begin something intends
to first get every one of the clearances from the government, which is extremely troublesome.
Conversely, Indian government advances development by

Compare And Contrast Anxiety And Depression
There are many similarities between mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Often times, many
symptoms of one disorder stem off of having the other. For example, symptoms of anxiety can be
brought on by depressive thoughts, such as thoughts about suicide, and visa versa. The differences,
however, are far more prominent than the ways they are the same. Anxiety is a disorder characterized
by fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. People with anxiety tend to have less noticeable
symptoms than people with depression, as symptoms of anxiety are things such as physical
sensations of strong emotions of fear. Depression symptoms are more physical and noticeable from
the outside, such as lack of eating or sleep, or lack of interest in doing things. People with
depression may become...show more content...
Anxiety can also run in families, or be caused by outside conditions such as excessive stress,
drastic changes in living conditions, or abuse. Depression on the other hand, is caused by
changes in brain chemistry. However, like anxiety, depression can be caused by genetics and
medical conditions that create an imbalance of the brain's chemicals. Depressive episodes often
last for days, leaving a person mopey and sluggish, or, on the other side of the spectrum,
frighteningly up, or manic. This is when a person seems to have boundless energy and doesn't
sleep for days. Episodes of anxiety last much shorter periods of time, flaring up and disappearing
within the same day. Symptoms of an episode can include increased heart rate, sweating, and
trembling. These can be combatted with controlled breathing, while generally, depressive episodes
have to run their course. Anxiety and depression are two very different, though just as harmful
disorders. When you have one, you generally have the other It's a vicious cycle, but luckily, there

however they both have differences regarding their use of humor, examples, and points made in their

The way Barry and Britt support their points in their compare and contrast essays differ. In Batting
Clean–Up and Striking Out, Barry uses lots of personal stories and factual happenings to explain his
opinions. For example, to explain how men are worse at cleaning Barry specifically refers to a
volcano eruption that happened in Pompei because the men, who were in control of the cleaning,
did not notice ashes piling up around and in their houses. In addition, when describing how men
are better with sports than woman he refers to a personal story; specifically a story about a dinner
party that he attended where the men were glued to the World Series and the women were still
chatting amongst themselves. These forms of examples are personal stories that offer validity. On
the other hand, in Britt's Neat people vs. Sloppy people she uses more dreamt up incidences to
explain her opinions. For example when explaining how neat people are "viscous with their mail"
she explains, " All ads, catalogs, pleas for charitable contributions, church bulletins, and
money–saving coupons go straight into the trash can without being opened...No sentimental
salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Into the trash it goes" (256).
As seen in this example, Britt uses lots of lists and possible incidents that could exist to support her
points, but do these incidences

"Young Goodman Brown" and "The Lottery"

ENGL 102–B46 LUO
Thesis Statement
The stories "The Lottery" and "Young Goodman Brown" both appear to show that human behavior
and judgment can be flawed, even if the person's intentions appear good to them. There is a level of
fear and underlying evil in Puritan settings in both stories.
I. Introduction/Statement of Thesis

The theme of the story "The Lottery" is blind acceptance of something just because it is considered
tradition. In Jackson's "The Lottery", symbols are utilized to help show the theme. The name of the
story, "The Lottery", itself is a symbol. The term lottery can be viewed, by most, as a good thing, a
hope in winning, but winning the lottery takes on a very different, very dark meaning in
Jackson's story. Also, the names of the characters are symbols as well. For example, Graves is a
name that would portray death and Summers is a bright and cheerful name. Also, the name Old
Man Warner would show tradition. Next, is the use of the black box and the black dot on the
paper. The color black is showing darkness, evil, and death. The tradition of the black box is a
symbol, in the fact that it is worn and faded, but still used by the villagers. Shirley Jackson
conveys the theme very clearly through the use of symbols. In the end, the villagers are shown to
be evil and murderous just because of tradition. The villagers do not seem to have a problem with
murdering others within the lottery because it is what they have always done and no one is going to
declare that what they are doing is wrong. This shows the reader that following blindly can have
dangerous consequences. The theme of "Young BrownGoodman" is that the main character is
basing his beliefs and faith on what others in his life believe or have faith in. The theme of "Young

Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories––
Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift
There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift
and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both
similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their
inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these
stories are alike and distinct.
In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words

the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and

In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different
perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator,
mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less
remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good
example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's
shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of
writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the
story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also,
another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in
other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because

Comparing Two Works Of Art Essay
Comparing two works of art
For my final project, I will compare two pieces of art and show the comparisons and differences
that they have in the Greek ancient period and the modern period of the same theme "the
representation of the Trojan war". The visual work art is a bilingual art because it was made with
the participation of two artists, Andokides (Red figure) and the Lysippides (Black figure) and it is
titled "Achilles and Ajax Playing a Dice a Game". It was painted in 525–520 B.C in Greece and it
represents the ancient Greece. The literary artwork I will consider is The Iliad, an epic poem by the
ancient Greek poet Homer in 750 BCE. I will compare both artworks and connect them to the
contemporary period debating the similarities and differences that the poem and the ceramic have
and how they influenced our modern world, which help the creation of the film Troy led by Brad
Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom in 2004.
The bilingual amphora was painted in Athens, Greece during the ancient Greek period in a black
figure and red figure style. This was a typical style in Athens, Greece at that time and it was
mainly to decorate fine pottery. Most of the amphoras were made in sections initially (neck and
body) and were put together afterwards (the foot and handles). This pottery was not for everyday
use, but it was affordable for most of the population. This fine Greek pottery goes back to the
Minoan and Mycenaean pottery of the Bronze Age. The black figure technique focused

Two Things To Compare And Contrast For An Essay

  • 1. Comparing The Statue Of Apollo Belvede After looking at the vast antique collection found in the Sir John Soanes's Museum, London, I was able to identify with 2 objects that I felt had the most interest to me. Found in the Colonnade and Dome room, I will compare and contrast the statue of Apollo Belvedere, a Greek god originally made from bronze and discovered in Rome in the late 15th century. The second is a statue of the Ephesian Diana, an Egyptian sculpture derived of marble. There are a number of statues replicating the pagan goddess, Artemis from Ephesus and can be found dating back to the first and second centuries AD. The one depicted above from the Soane museum dates back to 2nd century AD, and the head turreted crown indicates this. The Ephesian Diana is said to be...show more content... Apollo is a classical sculpture, of the renaissance period. Being naturalistic it exhibits all areas of the body: muscular arms, legs torso, and pubic region. Many copies of Apollo are completely nude, however Saone's version does show Apollo with a coy fig leaf covering his genitals. Male Greek figures of this time tended to be represented nude, this however, was uncommon during periods of ancient Egyptian art, as only people of low status would appear naked and female nudity didn't appear to a lot later. Diana you will notice is clothed. Classical art is generally associated with white marble however as with 70% of the antiques within the gallery, Soane's version of Apollo is a cast replica. The Ephesian Diana herself is made entirely from pentallic marble, you will notice some, such as the statue in Saone's gallery to have dark hands, face and feet which are made from black marble. Dark colours were very common to Egyptian sculpture to signify royalty. Most sculptures made within the classical period were to show appreciation for the gods. One way to achieve this was by size and quality. Apollo stands tall with a strong sense of prominence. Height was ideal as many sculptures were displayed in temple spaces or places where sculptures could be worshipped or idealized. Each and every muscle in Apollo is clearly defined, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Health care system is one of the most important and fundamental sectors in any country or region all around the world. Many countries pour a major amount of their overall income to support the health care system. One of the biggest issues in the medical field sector in United Arab Emirates is the lack of work forces such as doctors, nurses, and pharmacists (Gov of the UAE). Both of them are alike in some ways, but at the same time unlike from each other. For example, they both dress to their comfort, but the clothes they choose to wear are different. They both have similar taste in music and television shows. However, Nicole and Amy are more different than alike. Nicole and Amy have different appearance and style. Nicole is five feet and two inches with medium brown wavy hair that is shoulder length. She has big eyes and also freckles on her face. Nicole tends to dress very casually. • 4. Compare And Contrast Essay Psychology Amanda is struggling with her relationship with her parents which is typical for adolescents. She wants to express herself through her clothing and her parents are trying to pressure her into dressing more feminine or more typical. They pick on her habits, such as burping, which are not seen as very lady–like. Amanda's parents are also not very accepting of her sexuality. Whenever they seem to bring up the topic in conversation, both Amanda and her parents begin to argue. Her parents do not understand her, while her friends do. She feels unaccepted by her parents, which strengths her relationship with her peers and weakens the relationship with her parents. Mandy is a young girl experiencing romance for the first time in her life. She is very excited about the idea of boys liking her since she believes she was unattractive at a young age. This stage is important because Mandy is beginning to explore her sexuality and making connections /relationships with others. She has developed an obvious attachment to a few boys. She believes that she understands the real meaning of love opposite to her parents. This idea supports egocentrism in adolescence in which teenagers believe that their parents do not understand the emotions and the experiences they are having....show more content... Both of these issues cause tensions of the child–parent relationship. In adolescence, teens tend to spend more time with their peers and can find support and loyalty from friends. This quality and the strains on child–parent relationships accounts for the decreased amount of time spent with parents and increased amount of time spent with friends in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. A Comparison of Two Schools of Psychology There are many different schools of psychology, each have their own views and they all look at psychology from different perspectives. I am going to outline six perspectives and then compare and contrast two schools. The biological perspective and major figures such as Karl Lashley looks to the body to explain the mind, they look at hormones, genes, the brain, and the central nervous system to explain the way we think, feel and act. The psychodynamic perspective and major figures such as Sigmund Freud views behaviour as driven by powerful mental conflicts locked deep within the subconscious. In order to enable me to compare and contrast the psychodynamic approach and the behaviourist approach they must be discussed in more depth. Behaviourism is a movement in psychology that advocates the use of strict experimental procedures to study observable behaviour or responses in relation to the environment. B.F Skinner was a behavioural psychologist who became famous for his work with rats using his "Skinner box". He took the extreme liberty of transferring his experience and theories of rats directly to humans. It should be kept in mind that rats and people are tremendously different creatures, yet Skinner had no problem with easily assuming what was true for rats, on a very simple scale, would be applicable to humans in very different and complex situations. Classical and operant conditioning played a large part in Skinners research (Glassman, 2000). In a traditional behavioural approach, Skinner followed in the footsteps of Pavlov and Watson. This view puts across that the subject matter of human psychology is only the behaviour of the human being. Behaviourism claims that consciousness is neither a definite nor a usable concept. The behaviourist holds the belief in the existence of consciousness; it goes back to the ancient days of superstition and magic. The behaviourists asks: why don't we make what we can (Nye, 2000). Tessie's personality is somewhat similar to Paul's but they also have their differences. Paul is very hopeful about winning the money his family needs, he has an incredible love for his mother. He is also very passionate about horse–races. He has a real gift for picking a winner and it's this attitude that leads him to make money for his mother and save their house from haunting them. Tessie is also hopeful, hopeful that she will not 'win' the lottery. Of course, we find as we read that this doesn't happen. Tessie does 'win' the lottery and she seems to be the only one that is saddened by this fact. Little Paul is a very hopeful, fortunate boy. He so vividly pictures the horse races to come while riding his rocking–horse, it's as if he's in the race himself and the rocking–horse is the winning horse. In "The Rocking–Horse Winner", Lawrence really paints a imaginative picture with descriptions such as with Paul's "big blue eyes that had an uncanny cold fire in them", and in "The Lottery" Jackson paints a picture with words such as The town's children are collecting rocks like young children regularly do. The men are "speaking of rain, planting, tractors and taxes." The women are making small talk with one another. It seems like a regular day in a regular town." So, in both stories the setting is different and the people are different but they have a similarity in the fact that they are all gambling for something, whether good or bad. In reading these

Psychologists try to delve into the basic functions of a person and animals cerebral activity. Psychology tends to steer towards finding reasons for a person or animals actions in an attempt to resolve them. Skinner created the theory of Operant Conditioning as he believed that all behaviour can be controlled by rewards or reinforcement. This is very different from Pavlovs theory of Classical Conditioning as Skinner is trying to control voluntary behaviour. This is done by giving the subject a positive or negative reaction to an action with the theory that a negative response will discourage the subject to repeat the action. A good example of this is house training a dog, as the dogs natural reaction is to relieve itself, however it must be taught to wait until it is outside. The more the dog waits until he is outside, the more praise he receives therefore it is less likely to wish to instigate a negative reaction by relieving himself inside the house. A huge difference between the two theories is the way they carry out their research. Behaviourism uses animals to gain an insight into human behaviour, whereas Psychodynamic uses human subjects to research into the inner psyche. One of Freuds most famous experiments was 'Little Hans'. This was about a five year old boy who was afraid of horses, and was jealous of the birth of his sister. It was thought that Hans' anxiety culminated from his inner desire to be his mothers mate. Freud used Hans in order to help develop another of his theories – the 'Oedipus Complex' which is a small boys inner jealousy of his father and fear of punishment by castration by him. It must be stressed that the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Efrain Rincon Jr Professor Yuhas English – 6 6 May, 2013 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' and 'The Red Convertible' 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' by Ambrose Bierce and 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Erdrich both recount sorrowful tales of men during times of war. The stories differ in that 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' is a story written in reverse, where the readers do not truly know the plot until the end– whereas 'The Red Convertible' is just a man recounting the story of his long lost brother. However despite their differences, both of the stories continue to build up hope in the reader only to find nothing but a sorrowful story at the end. 'An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' by Ambrose Bierce was a short story written...show more content... The entire story was just a snapshot that occurred in his mind before his death. Ambrose Bierce purposefully continues to build the anticipation that the devout Union soldier had escaped, only to drop the reader into a tale of demise and overall doom. 'The Red Convertible' by Louise Endrich was written in 1984 and revolves around a Vietnam veteran and his brother. Lyman Lamartine is a young man whose brother has just returned from the Vietnam War and has been traumatized by what he had seen overseas. Before the war, Lyman and his brother Henry were extremely close. Before Henry departed for the war, and as Lyman recounts in the story, the two bonded over a red convertible. This car proves to be symbolic, both throughout, and at the end of the story, due to the change in Henry's behavior, illustrated by this quote from when Henry returns: "We had always been together before. But he was such a loner now that I didn't know how to take it." When Henry returns, he has no desire to ride in the red convertible, no desire to wear the bright colored clothes he used to dawn–– instead Henry just liked to sit around and sob about the war. The quote from the middle of the story, speaking about the television, and how Henry just sat "in front of it, watching it, and that was the only time he Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Compare And Contrast Anxiety And Depression There are many similarities between mental disorders like anxiety and depression. Often times, many symptoms of one disorder stem off of having the other. For example, symptoms of anxiety can be brought on by depressive thoughts, such as thoughts about suicide, and visa versa. The differences, however, are far more prominent than the ways they are the same. Anxiety is a disorder characterized by fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. People with anxiety tend to have less noticeable symptoms than people with depression, as symptoms of anxiety are things such as physical sensations of strong emotions of fear. Depression symptoms are more physical and noticeable from the outside, such as lack of eating or sleep, or lack of interest in doing things. People with depression may become...show more content... Depression on the other hand, is caused by changes in brain chemistry. Depressive episodes often last for days, leaving a person mopey and sluggish, or, on the other side of the spectrum, frighteningly up, or manic. This is when a person seems to have boundless energy and doesn't sleep for days. Episodes of anxiety last much shorter periods of time, flaring up and disappearing within the same day. In Batting Clean–Up and Striking Out, Barry uses lots of personal stories and factual happenings to explain his opinions. For example, to explain how men are worse at cleaning Barry specifically refers to a volcano eruption that happened in Pompei because the men, who were in control of the cleaning, did not notice ashes piling up around and in their houses. In addition, when describing how men are better with sports than woman he refers to a personal story; specifically a story about a dinner party that he attended where the men were glued to the World Series and the women were still chatting amongst themselves. These forms of examples are personal stories that offer validity. On the other hand, in Britt's Neat people vs. Sloppy people she uses more dreamt up incidences to explain her opinions. For example when explaining how neat people are "viscous with their mail" she explains, " All ads, catalogs, pleas for charitable contributions, church bulletins, and money–saving coupons go straight into the trash can without being opened...No sentimental salvaging of birthday cards or the last letter a dying relative ever wrote. Into the trash it goes" (256). As seen in this example, Britt uses lots of lists and possible incidents that could exist to support her points, but do these incidences Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 19. Compare and Contrast Essay Compare and Contrast "Young Goodman Brown" and "The Lottery" By: Melissa A. Reeves Professor Andrew Smith ENGL 102–B46 LUO Thesis Statement The stories "The Lottery" and "Young Goodman Brown" both appear to show that human behavior and judgment can be flawed, even if the person's intentions appear good to them. There is a level of fear and underlying evil in Puritan settings in both stories. I. Introduction/Statement of Thesis II. Themes and Author's Purpose A. The Lottery i. Just because something has always been done, does not make it right or just; following the crowd can be dangerously wrong and evil. ii. The author shows through symbolism and storytelling that people can be easily influenced...show more content... The theme of the story "The Lottery" is blind acceptance of something just because it is considered tradition. In Jackson's "The Lottery", symbols are utilized to help show the theme. The name of the story, "The Lottery", itself is a symbol. The term lottery can be viewed, by most, as a good thing, a hope in winning, but winning the lottery takes on a very different, very dark meaning in Jackson's story. Also, the names of the characters are symbols as well. For example, Graves is a name that would portray death and Summers is a bright and cheerful name. Also, the name Old Man Warner would show tradition. Next, is the use of the black box and the black dot on the paper. The color black is showing darkness, evil, and death. The tradition of the black box is a symbol, in the fact that it is worn and faded, but still used by the villagers. Shirley Jackson conveys the theme very clearly through the use of symbols. In the end, the villagers are shown to be evil and murderous just because of tradition. The villagers do not seem to have a problem with murdering others within the lottery because it is what they have always done and no one is going to declare that what they are doing is wrong. This shows the reader that following blindly can have dangerous consequences. The theme of "Young BrownGoodman" is that the main character is basing his beliefs and faith on what others in his life believe or have faith in. The theme of "Young Goodman Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories Compare and Contrast Two Short Stories–– Landlady by Roald Dahl and Chemistry by Graham Swift There are lots of great short stories out there, but in my opinion, both 'Chemistry' by Graham Swift and 'The Landlady' by Roald Dahl are two of the most unique and effective stories. They share both similarities and differences throughout. Comparing and contrasting the way the authors use their inimitable writing style to achieve their intentions in the story will give us more idea how these stories are alike and distinct. In a way, these two stories are similar because both the authors had carefully chosen the words ...show more content... In the beginning , Billy thought the landlady was 'terribly nice',which he was quite grateful to have such a nice landlady who give him a well–appointed service, but as the conversations go on, Billy was then frightened by her weird and creepy contents, he 'sat there staring straight ahead of him into the far corner of the room, biting his lower lip.' tells the readers that he's begin to frightened and suspect landlady, foreshadowing the readers that she might be doing something that couldn't be trusted by Billy. In another way, these two stories are different because the authors have been using different perspective when narrating the story. In 'Chemistry', author's written the story in the word of narrator, mixing both the perspective of adult and young boy's. Line" My father's death was a far less remote event than my grandfather's but no more explicable, I was only seven." can be a good example. Almost the whole story was written in past tense, added to the effect of recalling. He's shown a grown up man recalling memories when he was back in 7–10 years old. This kind of writing style makes readers felt more personal, because the subject is 'I', when reading out the story, readers will feel like they're experiencing the narrators' life, as if they are the narrator. Also, another interesting fact about this kind of writing style is that if I were to look at the same events in other character's perspective, it might be another whole different story because Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Comparing Two Works Of Art Essay Comparing two works of art For my final project, I will compare two pieces of art and show the comparisons and differences that they have in the Greek ancient period and the modern period of the same theme "the representation of the Trojan war". The visual work art is a bilingual art because it was made with the participation of two artists, Andokides (Red figure) and the Lysippides (Black figure) and it is titled "Achilles and Ajax Playing a Dice a Game". It was painted in 525–520 B.C in Greece and it represents the ancient Greece. The literary artwork I will consider is The Iliad, an epic poem by the ancient Greek poet Homer in 750 BCE. I will compare both artworks and connect them to the contemporary period debating the similarities and differences that the poem and the ceramic have and how they influenced our modern world, which help the creation of the film Troy led by Brad Pitt, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom in 2004. The bilingual amphora was painted in Athens, Greece during the ancient Greek period in a black figure and red figure style. This was a typical style in Athens, Greece at that time and it was mainly to decorate fine pottery. Most of the amphoras were made in sections initially (neck and body) and were put together afterwards (the foot and handles). This pottery was not for everyday use, but it was affordable for most of the population. This fine Greek pottery goes back to the Minoan and Mycenaean pottery of the Bronze Age. The black figure technique focused Get more content on HelpWriting.net
