Water pollution from combined sewer overflow (CSO) into rivers and other waterways has become
an increasing problem in the United States. An estimated 850 billion gallons of untreated storm and
sewage water are released into our waterways each year. Given that our grey water infrastructures are
unable to handle the volume of water entering their systems, a sustainable, eco–friendly solution is
needed. A constructed wetland is a type of green infrastructure that can help to solve this problem of
CSO. The cost of constructing this green infrastructure is less than that of traditional grey
infrastructure. Advantages of the constructed wetland goes beyond improved water quality, to
include lower operational costs, an added recreational area, increased habitat which could lead to
greater diversity of wildlife. Educating local officials and community members about the benefits
and sustainability of the green infrastructure will be vital in initiating the process of creating a
wetland.

Since the industrial revolution, humans have centered our population masses near lakes, rivers,
and coastal areas around the world. The industrial revolution has given us the ability to move
mountains and alter the landscape to suit our needs; moreover, we have utilized these natural
sources of water for irrigation of our farmlands and the drainage systems of our waste for hundreds

ingest and remove the harmful bacteria's present in wastewater before it is re–introduced into the
natural water cycle.
The continued efforts and technological advances in science being made today can greatly assist in
the prevention of human–generated water pollution. "Our sewer and septic systems are responsible
for treating large quantities of waste, and these systems do not always operate properly or remove
enough nitrogen and phosphorus before discharging into our waterways" (Environmental Protection
Agency). With the development and progress being made in wastewater treatment systems, the use
of ultraviolet and reverse osmosis water systems society now has the technology and ability to
reduce the risk of waster effluent damage to the sounding watersheds. Unfortunately, waste water
treatment is only one of the many small causes of water pollution, which lead to harmful algal
blooms in and around our coastal waters.

from farms, soil erosion which is usually deposited in a water source, sewages from homes and
septic tanks spill off nearby water sources and the list is endless.

However, for non–source pollution takes place from many different sources. Example, a river being

university professor named Jay Stauffer wondered the same thing and found the answer after

Pollution is still even today, a hot topic of politics. According to Merriam–Webster Dictionary,
pollution is "the action of polluting, especially by environmental contamination with man–made
waste." Pollutants can be more than synthetic waste. Pollutants can be natural such as soil, volcanic
ash, and minerals. Whether the pollution is natural or accidental, humans should always carefully
monitor pollution in our waterways. Pollution can affect the life from plants to wildlife, and even
humans. Therefore, having regular water testing is important for maintaining and monitoring
pollution, animal populations, and overall water quality. Water testing can consist of PH, hardness,
nitrate/nitrite, in addition to bacteria testing. The North Carolina Health and Human Services require
far more testing for the local waterways such as testing for uranium and radionuclide levels. This
project will focus on the local water sources such as ditches, streams, and bays. The water samples
came from around Dixon High School, Chadwick Shores Neighborhood, and various ditch systems
within Onslow County. Regular water testing is important for monitoring pollution because of the
lethal damage pollution can cause.

Abstract Water pollution is one of most rapidly growing problems occurring today. It is responsible
for more than million deaths worldwide. The Industrial Revolution was the catalyst that sparked
several types of pollution, air, water, and noise, to become more apparent in our society because of
the developments of factories, trains, and cars. Rivers were getting polluted by sewage and the air
by carbon monoxide and lead. This pushed the government to take affirmative action against
pollution by creating the Pollution Prevention Act and 1972 Clean water Act. Several other acts
were made to help clean the environment. Simple solutions to combat water pollution includes,
carpooling, ending the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and stop littering.
