GREEN COMPUTING

“Is the study and practice of
designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing
of computers, servers, and associated
subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage
devices, and networking and communications
systems - efficiently and effectively with minimal
or no impact on the environment“. It is also been
called as Green IT.
TO SUMMARIZE
• Green computing is a novel and an
innovative trend in the world of computing
which has minimum or no impact on the
  environment.
• Green computing has introduced a range
  of equipments and technologies which
help in limiting the impact on the
  environment.
• Use of EUPs help in different aspects of
the computing world help in recognizing
  the areas for improvement.
GREEN IT IS CONCERNED WITH

 Energy Efficient IT Architecture

 Advanced Power and Cooling

 Integration with Building and Landscape
    Architecture

 Using IT to enhance environmental
    education and responsibility

 Using IT to save energy
WHY GREEN COMPUTING

 computer energy is often wasteful

 leaving the computer on when not in use (CPU and
fan consume power, screen savers consume power)

 printing is often wasteful

 many of us print out useless things for some sake

     printing out partial drafts

 for a “paperless” society, we tend to use more paper
        today than before computer-prevalence
WHY GREEN COMPUTING

 pollution

     manufacturing techniques

     packaging

 disposal of computers and components

 Toxicity

 There are toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing of
computers and components which can enter the food
        chain and water!
E NERGY U SE OF PC S

 CPU uses 120 Watts
 CRT uses 150 Watts
     8 hours of usage, 5 days a week =
        562 KWatts
 if the computer is left on all the
            time without proper power saver
modes, this can lead to 1,600
            Kwatts
Energy use comes from

 electrical current to run the
    CPU, motherboard, memory
 running the fan and spinning the disk(s)
 monitor (CRTs consume more power than
    any other computer component)
 printers
DISPOSAL

 183 million computers were sold in 2004 (674 million
    cell phones!)
 New users in China (178 million by 2012) and India
(80 million by 2012) will require the creation of new
    computers
 Disposal of these devices constituted 20-50 million
tons per year (about 5% of the total waste of the
    planet)
 this waste is called e-waste
 where are we going to put all of it?
L AND F ILLS

 Europe has outlawed using landfills for
    computer components
 the US and Europe export a lot of e-waste to
Asian landfills (especially China even though
China has outlawed the importing of e-waste)
 in addition, incineration of computer
components leads to air pollution and airborne
        toxins
PRACTICES TO BE
          FOLLOWED
 Putting down the CPU and all peripherals during
extended periods of inactivity to reduce the energy
    consumption.
 Performance of computer-related tasks during
contiguous, intensive blocks of time, leaving
hardware off at other times to improve the efficiency
in the work by saving the energy.
 Powering-up and powering-down all the energy-
intensive peripherals such as laser printers according
to need to reduce energy consumption.
 Usage of notebook computers in the place of
desktop computers whenever possible to enhance
    cost reduction and energy savings.
PRACTICES TO BE
          FOLLOWED
 Usage of liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors instead
cathode-ray-tube (CRT) monitors not only decrease the
energy consumption but also to improve the efficiency of
work and hence the cost reduction also takes place.

 power-management features to turn off hard drives and
displays after the set minutes of inactivity.

 Minimize the use of paper and adapt proper recycling
    method of waste papers.

 The e-waste is to be disposed in the proper way according
to federal, state and local regulations to avoid toxic
    pollutions.
GREEN BUILDINGS

 Reduces the total ownership cost of facilities

 Improve energy efficiency and water
    conservation

 Provides safety, healthy and productive built
    environments

 Promotes sustainable environmental
    stewardship
GREEN BUILDING MODEL
CONCLUSIONS

 Green IT
 IT is a major power consumer
 A significant percentage of the power
        is wasted
     Opportunities exist to dramatically
        improve IT energy efficiency
 IT can be a very beneficial part of the
        Green movement .
Recycle - Donations

Make sure your system has the correct OS
license. Windows Genuine hologram label,
MacOS, or alternative FOSS OS like Linux.

Donate with original media and
documentation.

Wipe the hard drive with utility like DBAN. Do
not format as it does not remove data only the
table of contents.

                                                 16
Recycle – Dispose

o Wipe your hard drive with DBAN or
  comparable tool.
o Batteries can be recycled at many stores.
o Electronics drives sponsored by local
  municipalities.
o Wake County hazardous materials drop off
   o Location and hours:
     9029 Deponie Dr
     Raleigh NC 27614
     Mon – Sat, 8am - 4pm

                                              17
Reduce - Paper
eFAX – Send and receive faxes over the
internet

Use both sides of paper. Save single sided
sheets for reuse.

Add a duplexer to your printer or use duplex
mode.

Shred and recycle paper that can no longer be
used. 18
Reduce - Power
Use Energy Star approved electronics

Use OS power saving settings.
   • Turn off display
   • Stop hard drives
   • Have computer go into sleep or hibernate mode

Have computer go into sleep or hibernate mode when
leaving the office for an hour or more.

Turn off devices in stand by mode at the end of day.

Unplug devices that have a remote control.

                                                       19
Reduce - Power
Use the class of device that balances power requirements
with what you need to do.
Less Power
    • Smart Phone
    • Tablet
    • Netbook
    • Notebook
    • Desktop replacement laptop
    • Desktop computer
    • Most server class computers
More Power
Laptops instead of desktop computers gives portability and
reduces power usage. Most desktops are 250W+, most
laptops are 65-90W.
                                                             20
Reduce - Power
The monster file server. Most business servers are used to
store and serve files. Most servers are over powered for this
simple task.

Server used at my home: File server, name services, audio
streaming. Powered by Via C9 processor. 12W idle, 37W
max.

Home DVR server: TV recording, playback, and streaming.
40W at idle, 58W max.

Consider using network attached storage instead of a file
server. Seagate BlackArmor NAS uses 15-20W and is
available at staples.com.
                                                                21
Reduce Dependence

Consider local point power
generation.

30% tax credit for solar heat or
photovoltaic systems.

Most systems will still require 7-12
years for break even.
                                       22

Reduce - Power Use Energy Star approved electronics Use OS power saving settings. • Turn off display • Stop hard drives • Have computer go into sleep or hibernate mode Have computer go into sleep or hibernate mode when leaving the office for an hour or more. Turn off devices in stand by mode at the end of day. Unplug devices that have a remote control. 19
  • 20. Reduce - Power Use the class of device that balances power requirements with what you need to do. Less Power • Smart Phone • Tablet • Netbook • Notebook • Desktop replacement laptop • Desktop computer • Most server class computers More Power Laptops instead of desktop computers gives portability and reduces power usage. Most desktops are 250W+, most laptops are 65-90W. 20
  • 21. Reduce - Power The monster file server. Most business servers are used to store and serve files. Most servers are over powered for this simple task. Server used at my home: File server, name services, audio streaming. Powered by Via C9 processor. 12W idle, 37W max. Home DVR server: TV recording, playback, and streaming. 40W at idle, 58W max. Consider using network attached storage instead of a file server. Seagate BlackArmor NAS uses 15-20W and is available at staples.com. 21
  • 22. Reduce Dependence Consider local point power generation. 30% tax credit for solar heat or photovoltaic systems. Most systems will still require 7-12 years for break even. 22
