1. IN-CLASS LAB TIME STRUCTURE
We move in steps as a class through projects; the course is
structured to give students plenty of in-class time to complete this
work – IF and only IF – they come to class and focus on the task at
hand! We simply cannot hold the class up because people are absent
and/or not using their time wisely
Everything students need to know to complete the project will be
on Blackboard but they will miss out on all the in-class help and
instruction for days they miss
Everyone is held to the same standard whether they are present in
class or not
2. IN-CLASS LAB TIME STRUCTURE
Student attendance is both assumed and crucial to their
success
BENCHMARK GRADE credit is only granted during IN-CLASS LAB
TIME
FINAL AUDIO PROJECTS due dates (completed and posted on
blog) is TBD
NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED – I will adjust the due date for
everyone if – and only if – I determine that in-class lab time was
not sufficient
3. REALITY CHECK
The projects that depend on in-class lab time are a full 50% of
students’ final grades and, from now on, the bulk of what we do is in-
class lab work on projects requiring students to come to class and
focus on the task at hand
If students don’t come to class, they will fall behind and there is no
extra credit or late work accepted
The material simply can’t be retaught because individual students
are not here; the class is structured as in-person only
Students have until 3/27 to officially withdraw from a class
5. AUDACITY-BASICS
ALWAYS plug headphones in before starting AUDACITY
NEVER drag your work off your USB to the desktop/lab
hard drive
ALWAYS click on the PROJECT file on your USB to open
your work – that file’s icon should look like this
6. AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
Locate the AUDACITY PROJECT FILE on your USB that you
started last week and double-click it to open your saved work
7. If you see a help screen in front of you work, just click “OK” to close it
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
8. You can now listen to the imported
file through your headphones
Simply hit the SPACE bar to start the
audio playing
You use the control buttons at the
top to run the audio
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
9. Your imported file
should look like this
Today we will edit this
file so all that remains
are the answers to the
questions you asked in
your raw interview file
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
10. Listen to your file and highlight
the audio of your questions
which is what you DON’T want to
keep
You highlight the audio by
clicking inside the audio file and
dragging to the left or right while
keeping the mouse button
depressed
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
11. The highlighted area will now be
dark gray and when you hit the
SPACE bar/PLAY button the only
audio that will play what is in this
dark gray area
This is so you know EXACTLY
what you’re about to edit out
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
12. When you are certain that the
dark gray area contains only audio
you do NOT want you are ready to
delete that portion –
TIP: you can visually see where
audio begins and ends so use that
information to help make your
edits
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
13. Make certain you are NOT
clipping your interview subject’s
answers! Clipping is when part of
the intended audio is deleted and
the soundbite sounds “clipped”
and cut off, lessening the quality;
Clipping will result in a lower
overall grade for your project
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
14. NOW YOU EDIT OUT THAT
SECTION BY DOING ONE OF THESE
3 MOVES:
From top menu go EDIT DELETE
to edit out that portion
Use the shortcut key combination
Ctrl+K to edit out that portion
Use the DEL key on your keyboard
to edit out that portion
ALL HAVE THE SAME END RESULT!
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
15. That section is now deleted
and the gap closed up – playing
it back all you should hear now
is one answer going directly
into the next
You will use this track going
forward to choose the bites
you’re going to edit into your
final audio project
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
16. TIP: If you make a mistake, the
UNDO function will do just that
– UNDO your last several edits,
etc.
From top menu go EDIT
UNDO to undo your last move
Use the shortcut key
combination Ctrl+Z to undo
your last move
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
17. AUDACITY-SAVING
GET IN THE HABIT OF
REGULARLY SAVING YOUR
WORK BY CLICKING INTO THE
“SAVE PROJECT” BUTTON VIA
THE TOP MENU
TIP: You only use the “SAVE AS”
option if you are making a new
project file, NOT if you are
working on an existing one
18. Before you leave today you should have all the
questions removed and only answers left in a
continuous timeline – doing so will earn you a
BENCHMARK CREDIT for STEP #1
Do NOT worry about “small” edits like pauses,
“ums”, and “ahs” in the answers – you can edit
those out later in the process
AUDACITY-STEP #1: REMOVING QUESTIONS
19. AUDACITY-LOOKING AHEAD
Our next step will be choosing the sound-bites you
want and then writing/recording your narration to tie it
all together
We will also be adding music to the project but not
until you have your bites and narration done
Feel free to use the AUDACITY Help Manual and the
internet to figure out answers to your questions
