The Institute for Economics and Peace examined global terrorism and created a speacial matrix to organize
their findings: a “Global Terrorism Index.”
The results of the studies were published twice, in 2012 and 2014, and these reports provide a lot of facts
about our lives. For example, the largest number of terrorist attacks occurred in five countries:
Iraq
Afghanistan
Pakistan
Nigeria
Syria
82% of all terrorist attack victims in the world live in these countries. Until 2000, the main motive for terrorism
was separatism; now it is religion. Separatists continue to organize attacks; however, their number remained
at the 2000 level, while the number of religious extremists increased. Suicide attacks accounted for less than
5% of the total number of acts of terrorism worldwide. Most terrorist attacks are:
explosions, about 60%
shootings, about 30%.
The rise of terrorism in recent years is associated with the beginning of the 2011 war in Syria. In 2013, 66%
of all deaths from terrorist attacks were as the result of actions by four terrorist organizations: the Taliban,
Boko Haram, ISIS and Al Qaeda.
The world seems to be on fire with terrorist attacks shocking us every few months. We need to understand
that the world has not suddenly become worse; it always been dangerous, and never will be a totally safe
place. The Institute for Economics and Peace is trying to find some positive points to the current situation.
They have calculated that 40 times less people die each year from terrorist attacks than from homicide. For
example, in 2013, 437,000 people were murdered and only 11,000 were killed by terrorists. The study
concludes that “More than half of the attacks fail to cause deaths. Only in 10% are more than five people
killed, and only one in a thousand attacks killed more than a hundred of people.” But the situation is still
perilous. There is a list of countries with zero incidences of terrorism. These are countries that have, so far,
been absolutely free of any terrorist threat. But, as the history shows, it may only be a matter of time until
tragedy strikes. Some of these counties are:
Benin and Botswana
Costa Rica and Cuba
Finland
Haiti and Jamaica
Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland
New Zealand
North Korea
2. Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia
Swaziland and more.
