But how does EL wire work and what are
people using it for?
The wire you see glowing when attached to

made up of five major components.
EL wire itself is a thin copper wire coated in
phosphor that glows when an alternating
current flows through it.

Meanwhile, on the inside a very fine wire is spiral
bound around the phosphor-coated copper core.
When the current is applied this causes a reaction
between the copper core and fine wire that excites
the phosphor and emits light.
Surrounding these components is a clear PVC
case and on top of that is another
clear, coloured, fluorescent or transparent PVC
sleeve. This top layer contains an organic dye that
is capable of producing a multitude of colours
depending on which you choose.
