The document discusses the major industrial regions and sectors within the European Union, including automotive, aerospace, defense, chemicals, biotechnology, and food. The EU has strong industrial bases across these sectors and is a global leader in industries like automotive manufacturing, chemicals production, and biotechnology research. The regions of Silesia, Bohemia and Moravia in particular are highlighted as undergoing structural changes in their mining, electrical engineering, car manufacturing and steel industries.
2. European industrial regions
European industry spans several industrial sectors that
contribute to high economic valued-added activities and
generate mass employment.
• All the EU members have an idustrial
importance inside the European Union. Is a
condition for being a member.
3. Growth and Envioroments
European integration has always been a question of social integration. Now that deep
financial and economic crisis has – hopefully – been overcome, a sustainable upturn will
require the tension between growth and environment to be resolved productively This
presents great challenges to governments and trade unions. Taking up these issues, the
first round of discussions will examine structural change in European industry as a
challenge for the regions, focusing on the examples of Silesia, Bohemia and Moravia.
The regional industrial sectors undergoing change there will be discussed in three
working groups for mining, electrical engineering and car-making, and the steel
industry. On the second day trade unionists and researchers will discuss whether new
jobs must be “green” jobs, before European politicians explore the impact of European
structural policy on the social and economic policies of the member states.
To conclude, practitioners and researchers will outline the challenges for trade unions
and works councils organizing in new industries. Please find the programme of the
conference and complete the online registration form by the 28th of February on the
website of the Otto Brenner Foundation.
