4. Abstract
The costal eco system of Bangladesh contains a highly functional
and structurally diverse ecology, this ecology is gradually being
degraded . As a consequence the quality of life of a large section
of the costal community is in economic decline.
5. Introduction
Bangladesh, located in the tropical climate zone, is endowed
with a rich and unique flora and fauna. The country’s
landmass, supporting a large human population, is
frequently ravaged by natural disasters, such as floods,
cyclones and blighted by riverine erosion.
7. Coastal ecosystem setting
Landmass and biodiversity.
Natural and human change factors.
Ecological degradation.
Overexploitation of biodiversity.
8. Past initiatives of coastal ecosystem
management and conservation
Single agency/single sector approach.
Multi-agency participation approach.
9. Current initiatives in integrated
management of the coastal ecosystem
Holistic definition of coastal zone
Structured involvement of agencies and institutions
People’s participation in planning
Integration with national development process
Targeting and priority setting
Adoption of best available practices
10. Conclusion
The adoption of the 2005 Coastal Zone Policy in Bangladesh was a
significant step towards implementing ICZM. The immediate effect
of the adoption of the Policy was that it laid the foundation (Olsen,
2002) for the management infrastructure on which better coastal
management can be built.
