4. Background
• Polarization environment: bigger difference between wealthy clubs
and the rest, which suffer from financial downturn and
management abuse from the past
• Both teams with most wealthy ownership are in need to improve
their position in the table (Chelsea and Manchester City)
Europe • Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, which played last Champions
League Final, have not reached expected performance at 1rst half
of respective championships
• 2010 summer market was 29% smaller than year before
• Proliferation of injuries and low performance of some top players
• First winter market with overseas owner at La Liga (Málaga &
Racing Santander), both with bad sporting performance so far
• Real Madrid in need to replace Higuain, injured for long time
Spain • Atlético Madrid & Sevilla, with Champions League spot objective,
below expectations on pitch results
• First winter transfer window with no limitation for transfers among
La Liga teams (before player with more than 5 games in La Liga
could not be signed)

92. Headlines European Football Table (1 of 2)
FC Barcelona leads for 2nd consecutive year European Football Table, with an
astonishing 91,23% of points achieved. Borussia Dormund reaches 2n position with
84,31%, with Real Madrid right after (84,21%)
4 La Liga teams are among the top 10 of Europe by points achieved (FC Barcelona,
Real Madrid, Villarreal y Valencia)
Barça is undisputable leader in most of table types, including points achieved away,
(only European team with 100%), goals scored (general and away). It is also the
European team which concedes less goals per match (general and away) and the
one with the most favourable goal difference (general and away)
Real Madrid is the best European team at home. It is the only one that has won all
the games, the top scorer and has the best goal difference
Villarreal (3rd) and Espanyol (4th) show among the best European teams at home
92
93. Headlines European Football Table (2 of 2)
6 teams from La Liga are among the worst in terms of goals scored away (Racing,
Osasuna, Sporting, Deportivo, Zaragoza and Hércules)
La Liga gets confirmed as the most predictable tournament in Europe, as it is the
only one where top 2 positions (FC Barcelona and Real Madrid) are taken by same
teams year on year. German Bundesliga is one more year the most unpredictable
La Liga, with 2,78 goals per game on average, is the 2nd top scorer, just behind
German Bundesliga (3,14)
Goal battle between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at La Liga competes with the one
among Berbatov and Tévez at English Premiership. In both cases distance to 3rd
scorer is more than 50%. Golden Boot of 2011 will very likely come from La Liga
Leo Messi is the most effective scorer as on top of being best scorer, it scores a goal
every 71 minutes (vs Mario Gómez 81,6 and Cristiano Ronaldo 82,5)

95. Conclusions FTR 2011, winter market (1 of 3)
Top 5 European leagues together have spent almost 500mio€ at winter transfer
window, 4 times more than in 2010. English Premiership has monopolized 54% of the
investment . La Liga BBVA has invested 32mio€ (vs 8mio€ in 2010)
Astonishing expenditure seems paradoxical under current economy climate and
could be explained by the following reasons:
1. Polarization: figures are reached by few clubs that do not have financial issues.
5 teams concentrate 50% of total investment in Europe and 3 teams concentrate
89% of investment in Spain
2. Level of expenditure in Europe at summer transfer window was unusually low
3. Teams with high sporting aspirations are not at the top and sign new players to
improve pitch results (ie Chelsea, Liverpool, Inter de Milán, Bayern Munich,
Atlético Madrid)
Chelsea FC is the highest spending team, followed by Liverpool. Opposite to other
transfer windows, this time most of the income has been reinvested by selling teams
to buy new players (domino effect)
95
96. Conclusions FTR 2011, winter market (2 of 3)
Liverpool has been the highest selling team in Europe. Espanyol shows in top 10 of
Europe as the highest selling team in Spain
At La Liga, Málaga is the highest spending team and the one with highest player
circulation. Atlético Madrid is again a top spending team at winter transfer window
(Elías most expensive signing at La Liga)
30 players have been registered by La Liga teams. Loans and cost zero signings have
been massively adopted in Europe (more than 50% at La Liga). One more time player
exits are higher than arrivals at top 5 European leagues. Only 3 players (10%) have
benefited from new regulation at La Liga (no restriction on number of games)
Up to 11 La Liga teams have made no financial investment in transfers. Hércules
and Getafe have not participated at winter transfer window at all
Profitability of new player signings has decreased. Just one third of La Liga summer
signings has played more than half of minutes (vs 47% en 2010)
96
97. Conclusions FTR 2011, winter market (3 of 3)
Real Madrid is La Liga team which takes most advantage of players brought in
summer. Barça takes full advantage of David Villa but not of Mascherano. Cristiano
Ronaldo is the only striker that has played 100% of minutes
Barça is the team with most stable line-up; Valencia, the least stable. Málaga has
fielded 32 different players (the most) and Zaragoza 21 (the least). Real Sociedad and
Athletic Bilbao field the highest number of home grown players; Almeria fields none
The number of sacked players has decreased vs last season
Barça is the best team at European Football Table for 2nd consecutive year, leading
most of table types. Real Madrid is the strongest team at home. 4 Spanish teams
among top 10 of Europe (+Villarreal and Valencia)
Dominance of Barça and Real at La Liga is worryingly increasing, as it is the only
league where top 2 teams in the table are the same year on year
Messi is ahead at one on one goal battle with Cristiano Ronaldo, as he scores every
71 minutes (vs C. Ronaldo 82,5)
