5. ORIGINS
• Developed in India 2500 years ago
• Founded by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha)
• He was sheltered from the hardships of life by his father
who even built a palace where he spent 29 years of life in
solitude.
• Leaving the palace on day, he came across and old man, a
sick man and a corpse.
• The encounter made him leave his kingdom to find out the
understanding of people’s suffering.
6. FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS
• Even though Buddha fasted and endured immense pain for six
whole years, he was not able to reach inner peace.
• Finally, he came to the understanding of inner peace while
meditating under a tree which led him to the Four Noble
Truths.
• 1. Suffering (Dukkha)
• 2. The Origin of Suffering (Samudaya )
• 3. The cessation of Suffering (Nirodha )
• 4. The path to cessation of suffering ( Magga )
7. Teachings
● After Buddha ‘s enlightenment, he was intially hesitant to
teach because he knew his lesson could not be
communicated in words
● According to legends , brahma (the king of gods) convinced
Buddha tp share his learnings
● Buddha taught his for noble truths , which allowed his
followers to live a life of inner peace
● Buddha is not thought of as a god ,but rather a human who
uncovered the secrets to living a peaceful life
● The Middle Way is an important concept in buddhism
teachings.
