1978-2008: China Changing Course Like the Yellow River

This month marks the 30th anniversary of China´s Reform and Opening Up program, which launched
China´s market economy and opened it up for foreign investment. Numerous English phrases have been
used to describe the country´s change since. None of them, however, may better capture it than one of
China´s own sayings:

“’30 years, you are on the east bank of the river. Another 30 years, you are on its west bank."

The river is the Yellow River, China´s Mother River..Just like the Yellow River, China has truly changed its
course in the last three decades, and the Chinese people today are truly on a different side of the river.

Chinese Students Abroad Exceed 1 Million

More than 1 million Chinese have studied abroad since the late 1970s, an
official with the Ministry of Education (MOE) said in Beijing on Monday. In 2005,
118,500 Chinese students studied abroad, 106,500 at their own expenses. The
Chinese government has also funded more people to study overseas. More than
100,000 Chinese have studied abroad annually since 2002, according to the
MOE.

Niet alleen Duitse studenten hebben het oerdegelijke Hollands hoger
onderwijs ontdekt, in China is men ook vol lof over leren in de polders.
Het aantal Chinezen dat dit jaar in Nederland gaat studeren is 30 procent hoger
dan vorig jaar. Waarom in godsnaam Nederland?
Waarom niet lekker in Frankrijk of onder de Spaanse zon? Net als de Duitsers vallen ook
de Chinezen op de hoeveelheid Engelstalige opleidingen in Nederland. Dat zijn er maar liefst 1100.


